A desperate India will need their under-fire batters to step up in the second Women's ODI against Australia in Brisbane on Sunday, as the visitors aim to avoid yet another series loss Down Under. India's batting woes continued as the tourists were bundled out for 100 in the series opener, leading to a demoralising five-wicket defeat, their heaviest in terms of balls remaining since ODIs were reduced to 50 overs a side. India have never won a series Down Under and they will have their task cut out against a quality Australian side, which showed no signs of rust despite playing in the format after a gap of nine months.

India put up a dismal show with the bat as Australia stamped their superiority over the visitors with a five-wicket win in the first Women's ODI on Thursday. Opting to bat, India collapsed to 100 all out in 34.2 overs with Australia pacer Megan Schutt returning an impressive five-wicket haul. Australia did experience a minor stutter in the run chase, when Renuka Thakur struck twice in the same over, before coasting to victory in 16.2 overs. Debutant opener Georgia Voll (46 not out off 42 balls) produced a measured knock to ensure a comfortable win. Her effort included a six off Renuka in the cow corner region.

Harmanpreet Kaur Backs 'Dropped' Shafali Verma To Return To "Zone" Ahead Of ODI World Cup At Home

Shafali Verma, dropped from the India ODI squad, has the full backing of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who is eager to see the aggressive opener back in her "zone" ahead of Women's World Cup at home next year. Apart from Shafali, India will not have the services of wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia who suffered a wrist injury during the Women's Big Bash League. "She (Shafali) is a very important player for us and has done exceptionally well for the country. We are looking forward to seeing her get back into her zone and perform well for the team," Harmanpreet said on the eve of their series-opener against Australia.

Big Test For India's Batters Against Mighty Australia In Three-Match Series

India will aim to address their batting inconsistency in the upcoming women's ODI series against the mighty Australia, starting here Thursday, aiming to finalise their combination ahead of the Women's World Cup next year. The Indian team heads Down Under after securing a 2-1 home ODI series win over New Zealand. However, it was fairly evident that India's batting was not in top shape. In a bid to rejig stuff the tourists have dropped out-of-form opener Shafali Verma from the squad. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side would know that it has a huge task cut out against Australia who have historically dominated them in 50-overs cricket.

The Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur and BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Friday unveiled the country's new ODI jersey at the Board's headquarters in Mumbai. The women's team will don the new jersey during the three-match ODI series against the West Indies to be played in Vadodara from December 22. "It's an honour to unveil the jersey today and really happy that we are the first ones who is going to wear this jersey against the West Indies team," said Harmanpreet.

Uma Chetry Replaces Injured Yastika Bhatia For ODI Series In Australia

Wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has been ruled out of the three-match women's One-day International (ODI) series against Australia Down Under because of a wrist injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed on Wednesday. The BCCI informed that Uma Chetry has been called in as a replacement for the entire series. "The BCCI Medical Team has confirmed that Yastika Bhatia has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Australia due to a wrist injury. Her recovery is being closely monitored," the BCCI statement said on Wednesday. "The All India Women's Selection Committee has named Uma Chetry as Bhatia's replacement in the squad," the statement said.

Tahlia McGrath Named Captain As injured Alyssa Healy Ruled Out Of Australia's ODI Series Against India

Seam-bowling all-rounder Tahlia McGrath has been named as Australia's captain for their upcoming ODI series against India after regular skipper Alyssa Healy was ruled out due to knee injury. In Alyssa's absence, batter Georgia Voll has earned a maiden call-up to the Australian team. Cricket Australia (CA) added that Alyssa is in line to return for Australia in the subsequent three-match ODI against New Zealand in Georgia's place. For the series against India, all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner will be serving as deputy to Tahlia, while Beth Mooney would take up keeping duties.

Jhulan Goswami To Have Stand Named After Her At Eden Gardens

Legendary Jhulan Goswami will have a stand named in her honour in the 'B' Block of the iconic Eden Gardens, following a proposal by the Cricket Association of Bengal. A proposal to rename the 'B' Block in honour of the former India pacer has been placed before the apex body of CAB and if all goes well, it will be unveiled during the India-England T20I on January 22 next year. "I never imagined something like this would come to fruition. I would definitely love to watch a match from there," said Goswami.
