Jos Buttler Provides Big England Captaincy Update After Champions Trophy Exit

England skipper Jos Buttler said he wouldn't like to make any "emotional statements" on his captaincy but "all possibilities" are on the table after his side was shockingly eliminated from the Champions Trophy by Afghanistan on Wednesday. A listless England, barring Joe Root who smashed a century, suffered an eight-run defeat against the Afghans, and it pushed them out of the marquee event prematurely. Chasing 326 for victory, England were bundled out for 317 with Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran smashing a superb 177 and pacer Azmatullah Omarzai grabbing a five-wicket haul. "I don't want to say any emotional statements right now. But I think for myself and the other guys at the top, we should consider all possibilities," said Buttler in the post match presentation on his future as the England white-ball skipper.

Not Jasprit Bumrah. KL Rahul Names India Star "He Hates Facing In The Nets"

India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has revealed that he doesn't like facing teammate and pacer Mohammed Shami in the nets. Speaking on 25 Questions by ESPNCricinfo, Rahul was asked "which bowled he hates facing in the nets" and he took Shami's name. For the unversed, Shami has bowled 28 balls to Rahul in T20 cricket, conceding just 31 runs while also getting him out twice. He was also asked to name one bowler who gives him sleepless nights. This time, Rahul took Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan's name.

Daniil Medvedev reaches Dubai quarterfinals, Marin Cilic also advances

DUBAI: Top-seeded Daniil Medvedev didn’t have time to think about how to return Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard’s blazing serves Wednesday at the Dubai Championships on Wednesday. Medvedev, ranked No. 6, still reached the quarterfinals after a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 21-year-old Frenchman. The Russian player was asked about facing serves exceeding 230 kph (143 mph). “You don’t have any time so it’s pure reflexes and sometimes it makes life even easier because as I say, you don’t think much,” Medvedev said in his on-court interview.

IOC provisionally recognizes World Boxing as federation for Olympics

LAUSANNE: The International Olympic Committee on Wednesday provisionally recognized the recently created World Boxing as the body to oversee the sport at future Games. The IOC severed links with the International Boxing Association (IBA), the long-standing ruling body of amateur boxing, over financial, governance and ethical concerns and took over the organization of the sport at last year’s Paris Olympics. The IBA is chaired by the Kremlin-linked Russian Umar Kremlev. World Boxing was founded in 2023 and boasts 78 members led by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia and Brazil. IOC president Thomas Bach had warned that boxing’s national federations needed to find a new and “reliable” international partner if it wanted to ensure that the sport features on the program at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The IOC in a statement recognizing World Boxing as the sport’s amateur federation said the body “has demonstrated strong willingness and effort in enhancing good governance and implementation, to be compliant with the appropriate standards.”

Afghanistan Register Historic Win, Knock England Out Of Champions Trophy

Ibrahim Zadran's majestic 177 and pacer Azmatullah Omarzai's fifer trumped Joe Root's masterful hundred, as the brave Afghanistan registered a thrilling 8-run win to knock a largely-insipid England out of the Champions Trophy on Wednesday. England are winless after two matches and in their last league match in Group B they will face South Africa, who already have three points along with Australia. Afghanistan now have two points and will have to beat the Aussies in their final group match to entertain the hopes of reaching the last eight. For a long time, England's chase merely rattled along as the dismissal of Phil Salt and Jamie Smith jolted them early. They were 30 for two then, and eventually ended up at 317 all out with a ball to spare as pacer Omarzai (5/58) struck at crucial junctures.

Champions Trophy: Sunil Gavaskar Comes To Babar Azam's Rescue Amid Fiery Criticism

It's tough being Babar Azam at the moment. The batter arguably remains the biggest brand in Pakistan cricket, especially from the batting point of view. But, for a long period of time, results haven't done justice to the talent Babar has. With Babar's underperformance playing a big role in Pakistan's below-par show in the ICC Champions Trophy, the batter has found himself in constant line of fire. Amid such heavy criticism, Babar has received an important piece of advice from Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar.
