The Indian men's hockey team would look to put up a disciplined performance and avoid unnecessary cards in its bid to return to winning ways against Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Wednesday. After a thumping 11-0 win over Ghana in their opener, India squandered a three-goal advantage and were held 4-4 by hosts England in their second pool B match. The Indians started brilliantly and dominated the first two quarters to enjoy a comfortable 3-0 lead at half time. But the Englishmen came out hard in the final two quarters to stun the Indians.
Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 5 Live Updates: After a good fourth day, India will eye history as they chase a lawn bowls gold in the women's fours event on the fifth day. On Monday, India had advanced to the final of women's fours category with a nail-biting win over New Zealand. They will be facing South Africa in the final of the event. On the other hand, India's Harjinder Kaur won a bronze in women's 71 kg weightlifting on Monday, while judokas Shushila Devi Likmabam and Vijay Kumar Yadav bagged a silver and a bronze, respectively. Despite three medals on the day, India's position in the table remained the same as the side continues to hold the sixth spot with three gold, three silver and as many bronze medals.
The home crowd bobbed anytime an English stick tapped the ball forward. But for most part of the first two quarters, those taps followed odd retrieves after an Indian attack. The Indian supporters, outnumbered and out-cheered in the stands by their English counterparts, sat still for a change -- numbed by a sense of nostalgia unfolding on the pitch. If Harmanpreet's odd run and body dodge in England's half reminded hockey fans of Pargat Singh, Nilakanta's pass to cut the defence in half brought back memories of Prabhjot. And Mandeep's finishing touch completed that famous trio of the past, with Gagan Ajit Singh and Deepak Thakur rolled into one. Three goals in the first 22 minutes was a harsh lesson for England to stomach. This, after all, was the 'match of Pool B' -- expected to decide who finishes on top and faces the No. 2 team in Pool A in the semis. But this script certainly wasn't what both India and England would have had in mind before the game began. Modern hockey is a strange game, and can change within seconds. This one did, too. Despite leading 4-1, India were held to a 4-4 draw by the English.
India had a good Day 4 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games as India managed to make it to the finals of the women's four lawn bowls event, assuring themselves of at least a silver medal. Pugilist Amit Panghal progressed to the quarterfinals while Sushila Devi Likhmabam added another medal to India's tally, winning silver in judo women's 48kg event. Harjinder Kaur added a bronze as well to the weightlifters' tally. The contingent would now hope for a similar kind of day.
