The Giro d’Italia is set to continue for Stage 2, although the race does not travel over to Italy until Tuesday, with Hungary hosting the early stages in this 2022 edition of the famous race. Hungary has been welcoming the riders for the Grande Partenza at this, the opening Grand Tour of 2022.
It was an action packed finale to the opening stage of the Giro d'Italia in Hungary, which ended with a tight battle to the line in the uphill sprint between Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert).
Mathieu van der Poel and Biniam Girmay are so strong their rivals are literally falling over trying to follow them. On an opening day of the Giro where much of the pre-stage debate surrounded the likelihood of the sprinters’ ability to get up the final climb, the race’s first maglia rosa was still contested by three of the peloton’s fastest finishers.
There was an unbelievable moment on the podium after Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) won Stage 1 of the Giro d'Italia as he fired a Prosecco cork into his face. The 27-year-old produced a spectacular sprint as he stormed to victory ahead of Biniam Girmay (Intermarche–Wanty) in a breathless finale after the 195km route to Visegrad. BUDAPEST : Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Fenix won the first stage of the Giro d'Italia on Friday, beating Biniam Girmay on the final sprint to claim victory on the a 195-km flat ride from Budapest to Visegrad.
Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) grabbed a thrilling victory on Stage 1 of the Giro d'Italia as Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) crashed out in a mad dash to the line. On a pulsating uphill drive to the finish line, it was Van der Poel who took the spoils as he powered to a hugely impressive win amid utter chaos in the final metres. Biniam Girmay (Intermarche-Wanty) took second, just inches off a stunning win.
