APRICA, Italy: Czech rider Jan Hirt took the 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday to claim his first-ever Grand Tour win, while Richard Carapaz held on to his slender overall lead after a brutal mountain stage.
Stage 17 is a lumpy and unpredictable 168km ride that features three categorised climbs and another short downhill run towards the ramped finish in Lavarone. When the peloton slump to the floor at Wednesday’s finish, they will have conquered more vertical gain than the height of Everest in just 48 hours. Ad/> With 8km immediately uphill as the race leaves Ponte Di Legno, expect attacks from the off before a long descent of differing gradients for a smidge over 70km.
The three slender seconds that now split Richard Carapaz and Jai Hindley at the top of the general classification represent the smallest gap in this stage in the race since 1963, when maglia rosa Diego Ronchini had only two seconds on fellow Italian Vittorio Adorni. That year Ronchini did not hold on to win the Giro – but then neither did Adorni, who ended up in second place after conceding the race lead to Franco Balmamion after Stage 19 after a single day in pink.
Bora-hansgrohe risk throwing away Jai Hindley’s general classification dream at the Giro d’Italia if they continue hunting stage wins, according to Eurosport experts Adam Blythe and Robbie McEwen. Bora surprisingly sent two riders – Lennard Kamna and Wilco Kelderman – into the breakaway on Tuesday’s queen stage in the mountains, leaving Hindley with little protection.
