Sport is often exhilarating, with his topsy-turvy moments. Wins and losses often define whether the end result would be euphoric or miserable. But sometimes, sports can be cruel, beyond the nature of its results. Such is the feeling in the heart of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat and over a billion people in the world's most populous country after she was disqualified from the Women's freestyle 50kg final. The sight of the weighing scale showing about 100 grams over the 50kg mark would torment the ace wrestler for years, with the moment robbing her of a chance to win a gold medal for her country.
PARIS : Uzbekistan's Razambek Jamalov won the men's 74kg freestyle gold, while Japan's Daichi Takatani claimed silver at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.
The suspense of Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision on Vinesh Phogat's appeal for Olympic silver deferred continues. Earlier, it was said that the verdict would come by Saturday, 9:30PM IST. But it has now been deferred. In a fresh statement, it has been said that the the 'decision' will be 'issued' by Sunday (August 11). The 'reasoned order' will be issued at a later date. Vinesh Phogat had appealed in the CAS against her disqualification from the women's 50kg free-style final of the Olympic Games for being 100 gram overweight.

All too familiar with the pain of being disqualified over a few extra grams, Japanese Olympic champion Rei Higuchi offered his support to Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was debarred from her final in the Paris Games for being 100gm above the prescribed limit. Higuchi, the gold-medallist in men's 57kg freestyle event, was eliminated from the qualifiers of the Tokyo Olympics three years ago for being overweight by just 50gm. He eventually even lost a playoff bout and could not compete in his home Olympics despite being highly rated even at that time.
India suffered another setback in women's wrestling as Reetika Hooda lost to top-seeded Aiperi Medet Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan in the quarterfinal of the women's 76 kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Saturday. After Reetika won the first point by passivity in the first period, Medet Kyzy made a remarkable comeback in the second round of the game by forcing Reetika on defence and collecting a point by passivity and because Medet Kyzy was the last wrestler to win a point, she got the win based on countback.
The 2024 Paris Olympics were packed with unforgettable milestones and first-time accomplishments.
