Mohit Kumar Wins U20 World Wrestling Championship, First Indian Since 2019

Mohit Kumar on Wednesday became the first Indian wrestler to win junior world champion since 2019 after edging past Russia's Eldar Akhmaduninov in the 61kg final while Priya lined herself up to be country's only second woman grappler to grab the title. Mohit was trailing 0-6 in the final but the Russian, who is competing as an individual athlete, lost steam as the bout progressed and the Indian took full advantage to reel off nine straight points.

Wrestling Ad-Hoc Body Not To Change Criteria For Worlds Trials After Injury To Vinesh Phogat

The IOA-constituted ad-hoc committee for wrestling has decided not alter the criteria for the upcoming trials to select the team for the next month's World Championships in Belgrade. The trial to select the team for the Worlds, which commence on September 16, will be held in Patiala on August 25-26.

The trials for the wrestling World Championships will be held on August 25-26 in Patiala, the ad-hoc panel announced on Monday, ending weeks of uncertainty around the selection competition but participation of Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat is not yet confirmed. The exemption given to Punia and Vinesh from the Asian Games trials had created a huge furore with majority of the wrestling fraternity criticising the decision taken by the ad-hoc panel. The IOA-appointed committee has decided not to give exemption to any wrestler for the Worlds trials; rather it is irritated that neither Bajrang nor Vinesh has confirmed participation.
