Norris: F1 drivers should be treated as schoolchildren
Lando Norris had told the FIA that Formula One drivers should not be treated like school children and hopes the sport's governing body will be pressured into a U-turn over its decision to ban them from making political statements. F1's governing body has updated its rules to prevent "political, religious or personal" comments being said without prior approval. The FIA's controversial clampdown comes after drivers - including seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and the recently-retired Sebastian Vettel - have spoken out on issues such as racism, diversity and the environment in recent seasons.
Governing Body FIA Bans 'Political Statements' From Motorsports
The FIA has cracked down on competitors making "political, religious and personal statements or comments" in its updated rules for motorsports next season. The governing body's International Sporting Code (ISC) now deems "the general making and display of political, religious and personal statements or comments notably in violation of the general principle of neutrality promoted by the FIA" an offence. The FIA governs Formula One, world rally and endurance world championships.
2023 China F1 Grand Prix Cancelled For 4th Consecutive Year Due To Covid
Formula One chiefs cancelled the China Grand Prix for a fourth straight year on Friday, citing continuing problems related to the Covid-19 pandemic. "Formula 1 can confirm, following dialogue with the promoter and relevant authorities, that the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix will not take place due to the ongoing difficulties presented by the COVID-19 situation," read a statement on their website.
