The College Football Playoff is still a long way away, but there was still plenty of action in Week 1 that could come into consideration at the end of the season.
LOS ANGELES, United States: Luis Suarez appeared to spit at a staff member of the opposing team during an ugly brawl following Inter Miami’s 3-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final on Sunday. Immediately after the final whistle at Lumen Field, veteran Uruguay striker Suarez rushed at 20-year-old Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas and put him in a headlock, sparking a melee involving multiple players and staff from both sides. Officials scrambled to restore order, but cameras caught Suarez appearing to spit at a Seattle coach as he walked away from Vargas. Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said afterwards he was too far away to comment on any specific incidents. “Nobody likes these kinds of actions at the end of a match, but if there’s a reaction, maybe there was provocation,” he said. Certainly there were multiple scuffles before the trophy ceremony finally got under way, with both teams still in attendance. Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer took the high road, preferring to focus on the strong collective effort from his team in a victory over a Miami side led by Argentine superstar Lionel Messi. “Unfortunately that is going to take some of the attention away from a great performance by the Seattle Sounders,” Schmetzer said of the brawl. “I guess we can take that as a compliment that Miami’s frustrations led to some things happening on the field that shouldn’t happen on the field. “I’m going to shut that down because that shouldn’t be the story,” said Schmetzer, who added he had a “quiet moment” with Messi on the field after the game. But Suarez will be under scrutiny for his role. The 38-year-old’s reputation as one of the game’s arch villians was cemented when he bit Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014
NEW YORK: Tennis player Sorana Cirstea said the trophy she received after winning a recent women’s tournament was stolen from her New York hotel room while she was playing in the US Open. Cirstea pleaded for the trophy’s return late Saturday night, two days after she was eliminated from singles play in Flushing Meadows. “Whoever stole my Cleveland trophy from room 314 at The Fifty Sonesta please give it back!” Cirstea wrote on Instagram. “It has NO material value, just sentimental value.
SOMEWHERE IN THE bustling metropolis of St. Louis, a mother and father watch in awe as their young son shows signs of… superpowers!
NEW YORK: Daniil Medvedev has split with longtime coach Gilles Cervara after a disappointing year in the Grand Slam tournaments ended with his meltdown in a first-round loss at the US Open. Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, and Cervara both posted messages Sunday on Instagram, thanking each other for a successful partnership that included the Russian reaching No. 1 in the ATP rankings. “I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future,” Medvedev wrote about their “amazing 8-10 years together” in the caption of a photo of them holding their US Open trophies. Medvedev has won 20 titles but has fallen to No.
DORTMUND, Germany: Serhou Guirassy scored twice as Borussia Dortmund beat Union Berlin 3-0 for its first Bundesliga win of the season on Sunday. Guirassy finished off a cross from Yan Couto before the break, then the Guinea star beat Union ‘keeper Frederik Rönnow with a delicate chip before the hour-mark. Felix Nmecha made it 3-0 in the 81st. Jobe Bellingham needed treatment early on after a clash of heads with Union’s Andrej Ilić but the English teenager was able to play till the 70th. Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino started for his Dortmund debut following his arrival on loan from Chelsea on Wednesday. Dortmund drew its league-opening game 3-3 at St. Pauli last weekend, when Guirassy also scored. Cologne celebrates Promoted Cologne romped to a 4-1 victory over Freiburg to make it two wins from two since the team’s return to the top flight. Only Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt can boast similar records.
Full time was approaching at Anfield and it was clear something special was needed to separate Liverpool and Arsenal as they slugged out an early-season heavyweight contest in the Premier League on Sunday. Enter Dominik Szoboszlai. With a long-range free kick that flew in off the post in the 83rd minute, Szoboszlai earned Liverpool a hard-fought 1-0 win over the opponent likely to be the biggest challenger to its title. “The game needed a moment of magic for either team to win it,” Liverpool manager Arne Slot said, “and it was Dominik who did so.” Many thought Manchester City would be back in the title race this season, but perhaps not. Collapsing to a 2-1 loss at Brighton, for a second straight loss, was another sign that Pep Guardiola’s once-dominant team has lost its aura. “This is the reality — we are not at the level from a long time (ago),” City midfielder Rodri said. Trent who? Szoboszlai is popular among Liverpool fans for his work ethic and versatility, and the Hungary midfielder was filling in at right back — for so long the position of the now-departed Trent Alexander-Arnold — because of injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong. Szoboszlai did his best impression of Alexander-Arnold with a top-quality dead-ball strike that was out of keeping with the rest of the game. “Until now Trent was taking them,” Szoboszlai said of his former teammate who now plays for Real Madrid. “Now I could finally take one.” It secured a third straight win for Liverpool, with the defending champions the only team on a maximum nine points after three rounds of the Premier League.
