Week 5 brought an instructive slate of games. Teams that started the season flying high, such as Florida, Iowa and Mississippi State, came back down, while Ohio State reasserted itself and Alabama continued rolling.
If there was any team in college football that should have understood what an emotional hangover could look like this week, it was Florida. Last week, the Gators welcomed Ole Miss to Gainesville, with the Rebels riding high off their emotional 32-24 win against LSU. They had gotten a measure of revenge over their departed coach, Lane Kiffin, and rose to No. 4 in the AP poll as the toast of college football. The Gators, meanwhile, were also quietly off to a strong start despite tepid expectations. The result: a lopsided win for Florida that served as a cruel reminder for Ole Miss that success in this sport is fleeting.
Texas had the week off, while fellow unbeatens Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami and Indiana all rolled. But it was a big week for some of the other blue bloods of college football. Some, such as Ohio State and Alabama, asserted themselves in dominant wins over conference foes. Others, such as Florida, had their hot starts to the season ended abruptly. With the meat of the conference season ahead, there will be no more hiding.

An unbeaten record wasn’t entirely surprising for the Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes, but the Raiders? The team won only three games in the whole of last season, but this new Raiders team under Klint Kubiak presents all kinds of challenges for opponents.
