Bayern are hoping to go all the way to this season's final, which will be played at their own Allianz Arena in Munich on May 31. They threatened to run riot against the Scottish champions at Celtic Park as they dominated the first half and took the lead just before the interval thanks to a superb Michael Olise strike.
Vangelis Pavlidis scored his sixth goal in this season's Champions League to give Benfica a 1-0 win away to 10-man Monaco in the first leg of their knockout phase play-off tie on Wednesday. Pavlidis scored the only goal of the game three minutes into the second half in the principality, with Monaco handicapped in their comeback attempts as midfielder Moatasem al-Musrati was sent off shortly after. Benfica, twice winners of the European Cup in the 1960s, will now hope to finish the job in the return leg in Lisbon next Tuesday, February 18.
Vincent Kompany saluted Bayern Munich's composure and ignored the "crazy" atmosphere at Celtic to seize control of the Champions League play-off round with a 2-1 win in the first leg on Wednesday. Bayern boss Kompany was concerned about the potential for Celtic to be fuelled by the raucous 60,000 sell-out crowd in Glasgow. But the Bundesliga leaders produced a mature display that took the sting out of the Celtic roar for long periods. Michael Olise's thunderous drive into the roof of the net from 15 yards put Bayern ahead on the stroke of half-time.
A catastrophic mistake by AC Milan's French goalkeeper Mike Maignan handed troubled Dutch side Feyenoord a precious 1-0 advantage after the first leg of the Champions League play-offs Wednesday. The surprise win was a welcome tonic for Feyenoord, who came into the match in disarray after axing manager Brian Priske less than 48 hours before the game. "These evenings are why we do this," said a jubilant Feyenoord captain Quinten Timber. "De Kuip was on it again. We were on it. On to next week," he said.
