LILLE, France: A 17-year-old girl fell off a truck and died while celebrating France’s World Cup quarter final win over Morocco, emergency services said Friday. Celebrations erupted across France after the 2-0 win in the United States with hundreds dancing in the streets of Paris, watched by thousands of police on security duties. The teenager was on a truck at Aulnoye-Aymeries, near the northern city of Maubeuge, when she “fell and was run over” by the vehicle and was declared dead at the scene, according to emergency services. The driver of the truck has been detained, while another teenager who witnessed the fall was taken to hospital suffering from shock, authorities said.
LOS ANGELES: European champions Spain are on a World Cup collision course with Kylian Mbappe’s France if they can beat Belgium in a quarter-final on Friday. At the spectacular SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the Belgians face the daunting task of breaking through a Spanish defense that has yet to concede a goal in the tournament. If Spain win, they will head to Texas next Tuesday for a mouth-watering semifinal against France that many observers are already describing as the final before the final. First though Spain need to find goals against a Belgium team who started the World Cup slowly but caught fire as the tournament has gone on. The 4-1 demolition of the USA in the last round showed just how far the team coached by Rudi Garcia have come in just a few weeks. Spain meanwhile have not displayed the attacking flair of France but they are playing the possession-based football that carried them to the country’s only World Cup triumph, in South Africa in 2010. Lamine Yamal of Barcelona, who turns 19 next week, is Spain’s standout attacker but he arrived in the United States after suffering a late-season injury and has seemed a peripheral figure at times, scoring just once in five games. Yamal, widely tipped to inherit the mantle of the world’s greatest player from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, could be due a goal. “We know that the best version of him, the attacking Lamine, is something that we haven’t quite seen yet in this World Cup. Not to the level that we’re used to,” said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente. In Yamal’s absence, Mikel Oyarzabal has scored four times, including twice in the 3-0 defeat of Austria in the last 32 at SoFi. Spain have conceded just six shots on target in their five matches so far.
El Alamein, Egypt: Hundreds of euphoric supporters welcomed home Egypt’s national football team on Friday after the country’s best-ever performance at the World Cup, which ended with a thrilling last-16 exit to Argentina. A sea of fans dressed in red, white and black filled the grounds outside the airport in El-Alamein, where the Pharaohs boarded an open-top bus for a parade through the coastal city. “We are very happy with the team,” supporter Mohamed Gehad told AFP at the airport where he had traveled to welcome the players. “Their spirit was high, and ours is high as we welcome them.” Supporters waved Egyptian flags and Palestinian flags in support of nearby Gaza, as well as a poster of coach Hossam Hossan draping both flags over himself during the tournament. Egypt achieved their first-ever World Cup win before later reaching the last 16 teams at the global spectacle for the first time after beating Australia on penalties. They were painstakingly close to achieving one of the tournament’s great upsets against Argentina, leading 2-0 with just minutes left to play before the defending champions staged an astonishing 3-2 comeback win. But fans remained in high spirits, dancing to the beat of drums, singing patriotic songs and wearing shirts bearing the name of team captain and former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah. Others held handwritten banners reading: “You made us proud, men.” “They reached a stage they had never reached before and we are proud of them,” another fan Eyad Ahmed told AFP.
