Monteiro’s comeback victory still the stuff of WTCR legend

Tiago Monteiro was the hero of Portugal following his emotionally-charged home WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup win on the streets of Vila Real on July 7, 2019. The now 45-year-old, who lives less than one hour from Vila Real, suffered serious head and neck injuries in a testing crash in September 2017. He was on course to win the FIA World Touring Car Championship that season but fought a long and arduous recovery to return to racing instead.

Three years after its last visit, the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup is heading back to northern Portugal for two races on the streets of Vila Real from July 1-3. This is some of what you need to know. *A street circuit oozing history and intrigue, racing has taken place on Vila Real’s demanding hillside roads since 1931, when Gaspar Sameiro and Ercilio Barbosa conquered the original 7.150-kilometre course in a Ford Model A.

FIA ETCR calendar update following FIA World Motor Sport Council decision

At its meeting in Paris today, the FIA World Motor Sport Council agreed that due to the ongoing quarantine restrictions and associated logistical challenges in Asia, rounds of WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup and FIA ETCR – eTouring Car World Cup set to take place on the continent will not be held this year. Together with Discovery Sports Events, the promoter of the two series, the FIA is working towards securing replacement events.

FIA F3 race in Macau called off again, no return for WTCR

The traditional end-of-year jamboree for junior single-seater racers at Macau’s Guia Circuit was slated to be staged on 18–20 November, with hopes that it would be held as normal this year as global travel restrictions loosen.
