Premier League Fixtures Announced, Manchester City To Begin Title Defence At West Ham

Manchester City will begin the defence of their Premier League title at West Ham while Liverpool travel to Fulham on the opening weekend of the season. The 2022/23 fixtures, published on Thursday, give new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag an opening test at Old Trafford against Brighton, who hammered United 4-0 last month. Nottingham Forest's first match in the top flight for 23 years will be at Newcastle. Pep Guardiola's City will start their bid for a fifth title in six seasons at the London Stadium on Sunday, August 7, after all their rivals have begun their campaigns.

Alexandre Lacazette Returns To Lyon On Free Transfer From Arsenal

Former France international Alexandre Lacazette returned to Ligue 1 side Lyon on a free transfer five years after he joined Arsenal for a then club record fee of 46.5 million pounds ($58 million). The 31-year-old striker underwent a medical on Wednesday before signing a three year contract with the club where he made his name after coming through the youth system. Lyon said in a statement Lacazette's return had been a priority for several months so as to "infuse a new dynamic" into the team which finished a disappointing eighth in last season's championship.

Premier League Footballer Sentenced To 180 Hours Of Community Service For Kicking, Slapping Pet Cat

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma was on Wednesday ordered to carry out 180 hours of community service after he admitted kicking and slapping his pet cat. A judge at Thames Magistrates Court in east London also banned the 27-year-old France international from keeping cats for five years. Zouma triggered international outrage after a video of him emerged in February volleying the pet across his kitchen before throwing a pair of shoes at it. He was seen slapping the Bengal cat's head and saying: "I'll swear I'll kill it."

Todd Boehly Eyes Chelsea Success After Sealing Takeover

Chelsea's new owner Todd Boehly promised to build on the team's "remarkable history of success" after the American completed his takeover of the Premier League club on Monday. Boehly's consortium agreed a deal to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for £4.25 billion ($5.3 billion) on May 7 and the sale has now been officially rubber-stamped. "We are honoured to become the new custodians of Chelsea Football Club. We're all in, 100 percent, every minute of every match," Boehly told Chelsea's website.

Austria Manager Ralf Rangnick No Longer Taking Up New Manchester United Role

Manchester United announced Sunday that Ralf Rangnick has decided against taking up a consultancy role with the English Premier League giants due to the demands of his new job as Austria manager. The German took charge of United on a caretaker basis for the last six months of the recently concluded 2021/22 season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November and led the club to a sixth-placed finish in England's top-flight. Rangnick had been expected to stay at Old Trafford for the next two years in a consultancy post, but last month he was appointed as the new manager of Austria and it appears holding the two jobs at once is no longer a viable option for the 63-year-old.

Roman Abramovich Says Owning Chelsea "Honour Of Lifetime" As Sale Set For Completion

Roman Abramovich said Saturday owning Chelsea had been the "honour of a lifetime" after the Premier League club said the sale to a consortium led by Todd Boehly, the co-owner of baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers, was expected to be completed by Monday. Chelsea were put on the market in early March, days before Abramovich was sanctioned by the British government following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "I am pleased this search has now come to a successful conclusion," Abramovich said in a statement after the British government and the Premier League approved the 4.25 billion pound ($5.3 billion) takeover.
