Weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar, India's first medallist at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, will stay back in the UK for treatment of the UCL injury he suffered on way to securing a silver in the 55kg category. A Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) tear takes at least three months to heal. Sargar had come to the medal ceremony with his right arm wrapped.
South African swimming star Chad le Clos won his 18th Commonwealth Games medal on Sunday to equal the all-time record after taking silver in the men's 200m butterfly. The 30-year-old came to Birmingham with 17 medals across three Games and has now pulled level with shooters Michael Gault and Phil Adams.
The third day of the ongoing Commonwealth Games saw India adding two more gold medals to its kitty with weightlifters Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli winning the yellow metal in the 67kg and 73kg categories respectively. Mayuri Lute finished way back in the 18th position in the women's 500m time trial final as Indian cyclists continued to struggle at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. Lute clocked 36.868s to end near the bottom of the 20-cyclist final. Australia's Kristina Clonan took the gold in 33.234s. Another Indian, Vishavjeet Singh did not finish his men's 15km scratch race final.
The Indian men's hockey team decimated lowly Ghana 11-0 in its opening Pool B match of the Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. As expected, the Indians were relentless in their attacks and completely controlled the proceedings from start to finish. The Indians played to their strength and scored five in the first half before pumping in four and two goals in the last two quarters. India converted six out of 13 penalty corners they earned in the match.
