The Punjab government on Tuesday announced a cash reward of Rs 40 lakh for weightlifter Harjinder Kaur after she claimed a bronze medal in the 71kg category at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. A resident of Nabha in Patiala district, Harjinder totalled 212kgs (93 in snatch and 119 in clean and jerk) to finish on the podium on Monday night.
Indian men's table tennis team continued their winning ways as they marched into the final by defeating Nigeria by 3-0 in the semi-final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Monday. It was another dominant performance from the Indian paddlers as they didn't allow Nigeria to take a win in any match.

Nigerian lifter Joy Ogbonne Eze was unsuccessful in all of her three attempts in the clean and jerk round, meaning Harjinder Kaur became India's ninth medallist at the Commonwealth Games 2022. England's Sarah Davies won a gold medal.
Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj finished a creditable fifth in the men's 50m backstroke event, while Sajan Prakash's campaign ended after he failed to make it to the finals of men's 100m butterfly at the Commonwealth Games here on Monday. Srihari clocked 25.23s in the final at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre here. The Bengaluru swimmer had finished seventh in the 100m backstroke finals on Sunday.
India won a second medal in judo in the form of a bronze when Varanasi's Vijay Kumar Yadav (men's 60kg) defeated Petros Christodoulides of Cyprus by 'Ippon' in just 58 seconds at the Commonwealth Games. In a tight contest, Shushila, who had four stitches on her right toes, fought hard before losing the final via 'Waza-Ari' in 4.25 minutes. It was the Indian's second silver medal at the showpiece. She had finished runners-up at the 2014 Glasgow Games as well.
India's Pranati Nayak finished fifth in women's vault final of artistic gymnastics event at the Commonwealth Games here on Monday. The 27-year-old from West Bengal, who has won bronze medals at the 2019 and 2022 Asian Championships, scored 13.633 in her first vault attempt and 11.766 in her second go for an average of 12.699 at the Arena Birmingham.
Indian judoka Shushila Devi narrowly lost out to South Africa's Michaela Whitebooi in women's 48kg final, to win the silver medal. She was a favourite for the yellow metal after a great showing in the earlier rounds but a late move by the South African stunned her.
