High jumper Tejaswin Shankar ended up winning the bronze medal while judoka Tulika Maan clinched the silver medal. Squash star Saurav Ghoshal also took home the bronze medal after defeating England's James Willstrop.
India's Tejaswin Shankar clinched the bronze medal in the men's high jump final with the mark of 2.22m at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Wednesday. The 23-year-old won the nation's first athletics medal in the men's high jump event. World championships indoor bronze medallist Hamish Kerr won the gold for clearing 2.25m and pipped the defending champion Brandon Starc from Australia courtesy of lesser fouls.
Medium pacer Renuka Singh ran through Barbados' top order with a four-wicket haul as India beat their lowly opponents by 100 runs to qualify for the semifinals of the women's T20 cricket at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. Invited to bat, India posted a competitive 162 for 4 on the back of a fine unbeaten half-century from Jemimah Rodrigues (56 not out off 46 balls) and a 26-ball 43 from opener Shafali Verma. The Indians then restricted Barbados to 62 for 8 in 20 overs with Renuka bamboozling the Barbados batters with an impressive spell.
India's Gurdeep Singh won a bronze medal in the men's 109+ kg weightlifting final, lifting a total of 390 kg. The silver in the event went to New Zealand's David Andrew Liti, who picked 394kg, while the gold went to Pakistan's Muhammad Noor Dastgir Butt. The Pakistani lifter created a new Games record with a total lift of 405kg.
Tulika Maan's dreams of giving India its first ever gold medal in judo were shattered as she was defeated by Scotland's Sarah Adlington in women's +78 kg final. It is a creditable silver for the youngster who looked shocked and sad after the defeat. Adlington won after performing an 'Ippon'.
The Sri Lankan contingent at the Commonwealth Games has asked its athletes and officials to submit their passports after three members of the touring party disappeared from their respective villages. Sri Lanka, which is facing a huge economic crisis, had picked a 161-member contingent, including 51 officials, for the Games.
Indian weightlifter Purnima Pandey finished a disappointing sixth in the women's 87kg event at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. Pandey managed just two lifts, which is the bare minimum required to register a total, for an aggregate of 228kg (103kg 125kg) at the NEC. In her last two clean and jerk attempts of 133kg, the barbell slipped out of her hands before she could complete 'clean'.
Seasoned Indian squash player Saurav Ghosal on Wednesday won his first singles medal at the Commonwealth Games as he beat England's James Willstrop in straight games to take home the bronze medal. Ghosal, had won a silver medal in mixed doubles in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in Australia. It is in fact India's first ever singles squash medal at CWG.
