Pakistan's hopes of qualifying for the Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-finals hang by a thread as a defeat in one of their remaining two matches will see them miss out in the race for top four status. Pakistan face New Zealand on Saturday (November 4) in Bengaluru, before squaring off against England a week later at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. If Pakistan lose to New Zealand on Saturday, their journey in the ongoing tournament might come to an end.
Mohammed Shami claimed another five-wicket haul as India comprehensively defeated Sri Lanka to book their spot in the Cricket World Cup 2023 semifinals on Thursday. India posted a mammoth total of 357/8 thanks to significant knocks from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. In reply, Sri Lanka were all out for 55 with Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah in red hot form. Shami dismissed Kasun Rajitha to complete his five-wicket haul and he went on to celebrate with a special gesture. He put the ball on his head and pointed towards the dressing room - an action that left fans on social media confused. However, after the match, Shubman Gill explained the gesture.
Defending champions England are not having the best of time in India and up next, they face arch-rivals Australia in Match 36 of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. The match will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Before the tournament began, England were touted as one of the favourites alongside India to win the tournament. However, almost everything has gone wrong for them. After a defeat to New Zealand in the opening match by a thumping margin, England registered a big win against Bangladesh to get back on track.
Netherlands off-spinner Aryan Dutt has expressed his desire to dismiss star India batter Virat Kohli, adding that it would be the best gift of the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2023. Netherlands and India square off on November 12 in Bengaluru. The match will mark the end of the group phase of the tournament. While Kohli has been in sublime form in the World Cup so far, scoring 354 runs in six games at an average of 88.50, Dutt has emerged as a future prospect, bagging eight wickets in six games.
MUNICH, Germany : Bayern Munich's shock German Cup loss to third division Saarbruecken was painful but the team are confident of winning Saturday's Bundesliga clash at Borussia Dortmund, coach Thomas Tuchel said on Friday.
Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur on Friday described the tight security facing his team at the World Cup in India as "stifling", leaving players feeling as if they are "back in Covid times". Arthur's comments came a day ahead of the team's crucial match against New Zealand which Pakistan must win to keep their hopes alive of reaching the semi-finals. Several Pakistan players have already suffered fever and flu at various stages of the tournament which fast bowler Hasan Ali attributed to "room sickness." Players are not allowed to venture out of their hotel without heavy security, forcing them to spend most of their time in hotel rooms.
An angry David Willey on Friday said that not being given central contract by the England board was the "final nail in coffin", making his decision to retire at 33 a lot more easier. Willey announced his international retirement amid defending champions England's disastrous outing in the ongoing World Cup. His decision follows the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) decision not to offer him a central contract for the 2023-24 cycle. "That (central contract snub), for me, was, probably, the final nail in the coffin really, and it made my decision a lot easier. "But these conversations around contracts all happened before we came out, so when we joined up at Lord's I knew I was the only one that didn't have one. It was difficult," Willey told Sky Cricket. "I was upset, angry and disappointed. But I respect their vision, and don't have to agree with them." Willey on Wednesday announced that he will retire from international cricket after the end of the World Cup but insisted that his team's underwhelming performance in the showpiece has not influenced his decision.
