Lisa also tells us about "Ennio", a documentary by Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore celebrating the life of his friend and collaborator, composer Ennio Morricone. Morricone was the man behind some of cinema’s most iconic music, like the pan flute notes that set the scene for spaghetti western standoffs. Next, we head to Iraqi Kurdistan for the latest film from writer and director Hiner Saleem. "Goodnight Soldier" tells the story of a young couple faced with multiple obstacles – first, their feuding families, then a combat wound that raises questions of virility. Finally, we take a look at the eerie offerings of a retrospective of British film noirs showing at the Cinémathèque in Paris.
Meanwhile, the Arab World Institute in Paris is hosting a joint exhibition from French photojournalist Raymond Depardon and Algerian writer Kamel Daoud, as well as showcasing a major collection of Algerian paintings. Finally, we go out dancing to French-Algerian artist DJ Snake’s viral clip "Disco Maghreb", described as "a love song" to his country.
Although the good weather returned, organisers felt it was safer to cancel the first two days to secure the site, a move welcomed by both festivalgoers and artists. Minutes before the storm hit, FRANCE 24's Encore! chatted to French rock darlings Feu! Chatterton, who, at the time, were gearing up to play the festival for the very first time. While they never made it on stage, we hear the group will be returning next year.
We also hear the story of Brazilian rapper Sagat B, an ex-convict who rebuilt his life through music and now mentors young children from a favela in Rio de Janeiro.
Next, we plunge into the colourful world of painter Raoul Dufy, who was inspired by the landscapes of Aix-en-Provence and by fellow impressionists Matisse, Monet, and Cézanne.
We also discuss bittersweet comedy "I'm Your Man", in which German director Maria Schrader imagines an AI future where love and convenience can be programmed into any relationship.
We also get a glimpse of the renovations of the apartments of Louis XV's favourite mistress, as Madame du Barry’s lodgings are restored to their former gilded glory.
