Minutes after Madhya Pradesh won the Ranji Trophy, a tweet by India cricketer Dinesh Karthik went viral. It was a simple congratulatory message but the last line was telling, where he termed Chandrakant Pandit as 'Sir Alex Ferguson of Indian domestic cricket'. Ferguson was arguably one of the greatest managers in the history of club football. Someone, whose tactical nous made Manchester United a global brand in the satellite television era. Pacer Mohit Sharma lavished praise on Jasprit Bumrah and said that if he leads India against England for the Test match in Birmingham, it would break the taboo of fast bowlers not becoming captains. After skipper Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, speculations arose that Bumrah might lead Team India in the fifth Test against England. "I don't know how well you know Jassi (Jasprit Bumrah) as I know him very well. We played a lot of cricket together. He is a very cool and calm character. On the field, he bowls aggressively but off the field, he is very calm and if he becomes a captain then the taboo of fast bowlers can't become captain will not be there," Mohit Sharma told ANI.
England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler had a memorable IPL 2022 for Rajasthan Royals as he scored 863 runs, including four centuries and he was the main reason that the franchise was able to reach the finals. The batter continued his form in the recently-concluded ODI series against the Netherlands as he scored 162 not out in the first ODI. Former Sri Lanka skipper and Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara has now backed Buttler to open the innings in Tests.
Opening batter Mayank Agarwal has been added to India's Test squad for the rescheduled match against England, as a cover for captain Rohit Sharma who recently tested positive for COVID-19. Mayank's addition was important as designated vice-captain KL Rahul is also out injured and that leaves India with only one regular opening batter in the squad in Shubman Gill.
