Following the victory against Sri Lanka in the first T20I, India skipper Shubman Gill heaped praise on his batting partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, saying that it is great batting with him. Bowlers' marvellous performance in the second half of the second innings guided India to victory over Sri Lanka by 43 runs in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday. Recapping the first T20I, Sri Lanka skipper Charith Assalanka won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The meeting between the BCCI and all ten Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners is all set to take place on July 31, ahead of the mega auction for next season. During the meeting, the board and the franchises will discuss about number of retentions teams can make and the Right to Match (RTM) options in hand ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction. The future of the 'Impact Player' rule will also be up for debate after garnering criticism from all corners. Star players likes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had voiced there opinions on the matter, expressing their disappointments.
India's newly-appointed T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav began his journey as the full-time skipper of the team in emphatic fashion, winning the first match of the series quite convincingly. Suryakuma's Team India beat the Lankans by 43 runs after putting a whopping total of 213/7 on the board, with the skipper leading from the front. Surya scored 58 runs off 26 balls during his stay in the middle, and was pivotal in dictating the tempo of the game. Even as a skipper Surya gave a fine example of his strategic mindset, helping the team begin the tour on a winning note. As a result, Surya was named the Player of the Match, with the honour enabling him to match Virat Kohli's world record.
Hardik Pandya's skill sets are equivalent to premier England all-rounder and captain Ben Stokes but the mercurial Indian needs to show more consistency, reckoned former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris. Recently, Suryakumar Yadav was preferred over Pandya as India's captain in T20Is for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, as chief selector Ajit Agarkar "wanted someone who was likely to be available more often." "This champion all-rounder (Pandya) has got as many skills as anyone. He's probably in a similar ability-zone as someone like Ben Stokes. He's got much more talent than that (his recent performances)," Styris told PTI Videos in an interview.
The decision to elevate star batter Suryakumar Yadav into the leadership role has garnered much attention, especially with Hardik Pandya being snubbed of the same job. The decision to snub Hardik for the leadership role came as a shock to many. Over the past few years, Hardik has led Team India in T20Is in the absence of captain Rohit Sharma, and was also his deputy during the successful T20 World Cup campaign last month. While addressing the debate at a press conference, India chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasised that the decision to name Suryakumar the captain was taken considering the fitness aspect in mind.
Having made a winning start to his journey as India's new T20I captain on Saturday, Suryakumar Yadav said he always thought that the game against Sri Lanka was under control despite a good start by the hosts as there was hardly any dew to make life difficult for his bowlers. Chasing a target of 214, Sri Lanka were cruising along at 149 for 2 before losing eight wickets for 21 runs to lose the opening T20I by 43 runs. "We were fortunate that there was no dew. The way we played in the World Cup, that reminded us that the game was still too far," Suryakumar, who also won the 'Player of the Match' award for his 26-ball-58, said. He praised the Sri Lankans for a good batting effort but said he always knew that the track would slow down as the game progressed.
Team India's ODI and Test skipper Rohit Sharma was spotted roaming on the streets of Mumbai in his swanky Range Rover car. Rohit, who has been on a break since the conclusion of India's victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, returned home ahead of his departure to Sri Lanka for a 3-match ODI series. Rohit was spotted with his wife Ritika Sajdeh and daughter Samaira in Mumbai as he looked to move on from the vacation mode and get back to cricketing duties.
