Carlos Alcaraz says his confidence is “pretty high” as he won in straight sets against Marin Cilic in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters. Alcaraz, who can surpass Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev as world No. 2 in the ATP rankings if he becomes champion in Cincinnati, beat Cilic 7-6(4) 6-1.
Emma Raducanu’s impressive form at the Cincinnati Open was brought to an end by Jessica Pegula who beat the British No. 1 7-5 6-4. Raducanu had two of her best victories of the year earlier in the week when she beat Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, dropping just six games in total.
Cameron Norrie cruised into the quarter-finals of the Western and Southern Open with a dominant win over American wild card Ben Shelton.
Andy Murray says he is yet to decide how he will announce his retirement from tennis, admitting he «doesn't know» whether he would do so at all. Whilst there is no suggestion the Scot's announcement is imminent, the 'r' word has been in the air all week at the Cincinnati Open with the impending departure from tennis of Serena Williams, who said earlier this month that she had decided to «evolve away» from the game.
Cameron Norrie said that his positive attitude helped him seal his first-ever win over British compatriot Andy Murray at the Cincinnati Open. Norrie's 3-6 6-3 6-4 win in 2h37 was not one of his better performances, with the 35-year-old Murray in the ascendancy for much of the match. Ad But Norrie never wavered mentally, and he admitted afterwards that was the key as he ground down Murray, who ended the match unable to walk due to cramps, a problem that has been his bete noire during the US hard-court season so far, and that saw him helped off the court at the finish.
Cameron Norrie won the battle of the Brits at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati by punishing Andy Murray’s wastefulness.
