PARIS :Cuban Arlen Lopez Cardona's bid for a record-equalling third Olympic gold medal ended when he was eliminated from the men's light-heavyweight boxing competition on Sunday in a semi-final defeat by Ukraine's Oleksandr Khyzhniak.
Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting became the second fighter at the centre of a Paris Olympics gender row to guarantee herself a medal after convincingly winning her quarter-final on Sunday. Lin, who together with Algerian boxer Imane Khelif is at the centre of a storm over their eligibility, defeated Bulgaria's Svetlana Staneva on an unanimous points decision to reach the semi-finals of the women's 57kg category. With her second win of the tournament, the 28-year-old Lin is certain to win a medal because losing semi-finalists in the boxing take home bronze. After a scrappy and tetchy fight, the 34-year-old Staneva made an X sign with her fingers to the crowd and, clearly angry, declined to speak to reporters.
PARIS : Cuba's twice Olympic champion Arlen Lopez Cardona was eliminated from the men's light-heavyweight boxing competition at the Paris Games on Sunday following a semi-final defeat to Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak.
Olympics debutant Nishant Dev (71kg) bowed out of the Paris Games following a heartbreaking defeat to Mexico's Marco Verde Alvarez in the Men's 71kg quarterfinal here on Saturday. The 23-year-old World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Indian lost by a 1-4 split verdict to his second seed Mexican opponent in the quarterfinal at the North Paris Arena. Nishant started well, with four judges ranking him higher after the first round. However, Nishant was unable to hold the momentum, notably beginning to fatigue from the second round onwards, as Verde was able to land more punches.
In a bout that attracted global attention, Hungary's Luca Anna Hamori (66kg) braved intimidating gender row boxer Iman Khelif for three competitive rounds at the Paris Olympics and walked out feeling proud of herself as "not fighting was not an option" for her, here Saturday. The Algerian, embroiled in a major gender controversy in the French capital, left the ring in tears after she guaranteed herself at least bronze by entering the women's 66kg semifinals.
