India on radar for Australia's Mitchell Swepson

Sri Lanka and Pakistan "great preparation". Swepson, a leg-spinner, combined with Nathan Lyon to play a key part in the tourists' thrashing of Sri Lanka in the opening Test last week to go 1-0 up in the two-match series. The victory for the Pat Cummins-led side inside three days at a turning Galle pitch comes after their 1-0 Test triumph in Pakistan in March.

India vs England: Verbal exchange with Virat Kohli part and parcel of game, says Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow has played down the heated verbal exchange he had with senior India player Virat Kohli during the third day of the rescheduled fifth Test, saying it was part and parcel of the game. During the morning session on Sunday, Kohli had something to say to Bairstow about his 'play and miss' game but the England batter wasn't someone to take it lightly. At one point, the umpires had to intervene to cool down tempers. "Nah, there was literally nothing to it," Bairstow, who hit 106 off 140 balls, said when asked about the heated exchange with Kohli. "We've played against each other for a solid 10 years now. It's a bit of craic (having good time, enjoyable social activity). We're fiercely competitive on the field and that's what it's about. "We're playing Test cricket and we're two competitors. It brings the best out of us. Whatever it takes, you want to get your team over the line and that's part and parcel of the game." After that altercation, Bairstow started chancing his arms and played a lot of lofted shots over mid-off and clipped a few towards the mid-wicket boundary. Asked at the press conference after the third day's play if Kohli was "poking the bear", Bairstow replied, "It's a nice pun that in it, really.

India vs England 2022, 5th Test: Virat Kohli altercation riles up Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow has been England’s most in-form batter this year. In fact, he is the leading run-getter in 2022 in Test cricket. Yet, the man who terrorised New Zealand, with two brutal hundreds, could hardly lay bat on ball as Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah put him through a trial by fire late on day two as he went back unbeaten on 12 off 47 balls to fight another day. He would have hoped that a brighter forecast with the sun out on day three at Edgbaston on Sunday, would have made life a lot easier. But he didn’t find any favours from both Bumrah and Shami. Shami was relentless with his line and cut Bairstow into half at least a dozen times. He also used the away-going delivery smartly to induce the false shot. He remained scoreless for 20 deliveries as all the talk of 'Bazball' went out of the window.

India vs England 2022, 5th Test: Advantage India as Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishbah Pant consolidate after England's fightback

England, who had started proceedings at 84 for five, were bowled out for 284, giving India a sizeable lead of 132, despite a counter-attacking hundred for the ages by England’s man in form, Jonny Bairstow (106, 140 balls, 14x4, 2x6). Advantage India, many felt. But under skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, this England team knows how to fight. They prized out the scalps of Shubman Gill and Hanuma Vihari and more importantly Virat Kohli, caught off a rebound in the slips by Joe Root off a beauty from Stokes that bounced and seamed off a length. It was the second change of ball out of three that did the trick for Stokes and England as Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara were looking totally untroubled and Kohli, with a couple of gorgeous cover drives, looked in the mood. The ball change seemed to help the bowlers get more bounce and movement that triggered Kohli’s fall.
