World Athletics Championships: Long-jumper Murali Sreeshankar enters final to create history, steeplechaser Avinash Sable also qualifies for final

Sreeshankar, who had entered the championships as a dark horse for a medal at second spot in the season's top list, had a best jump of exactly 8m to finish second in qualification round Group B and seventh overall. Anju Bobby George was the first Indian to make it to the World Championships long jump finals and first to win a medal -- bronze in 2003 edition in Paris. Two other Indians, Jeswin Aldrin and Muhammed Anees Yahiya failed to make it to the final round after finishing ninth and 11th in Group A qualification round with best jumps of 7.79m and 7.73m respectively. Those who achieved 8.15m or the 12 best performers from across the two groups qualify for the finals to be held on Sunday (6:50am IST).

Allyson Felix retires with unmistakably historic legacy

EUGENE, Oregon – The moment was both majestic, and at the same time lacking in appropriate majesty. Majestic, because the athlete was Allyson Felix, at 36 years old, the most decorated woman ever in track and field, running the last competitive lap of her life and adding yet another medal to the heaviest collection in the sport’s long history. And because the United States won a bronze medal, not gold, a minor quibble in the end.

World Athletics Championships: Allyson Felix signs off career with a bronze as Dominican Republic win 4x400 mixed relay

Allyson Felix was denied a golden farewell at the World Championships after the United States took bronze behind Dominican Republic and Netherlands in a spectacular 4x400m mixed relay in Eugene, Oregon on Friday. The United States opened a massive gap in the final changeover and looked set for victory but Dominican anchor Fiordaliza Cofil reeled in Kennedy Simon down the home stretch to win gold and go one better than their silver at the Tokyo Olympics. "We have been training hard for this moment so I knew I could catch her," Cofil said of Simon. "Allyson Felix is a legend and I am happy to be in the final with her."
