The Indian women's football team failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the Asian Games after their 0-1 defeat to Thailand on Sunday. Indian side fought bravely but a 52nd minute goal from Thongrong Parichat helped Thailand to emerge winner in their Group B match. India had lost their Asian Games opener to Chinese Taipei 1-2. The defeat against Thailand also ended their chances of finishing among the three second placed teams, who will enter the knockouts along with five top-ranked sides, from five groups.

Asian Games 2023: Srihari Nataraj 6th, Women's Freestyle Relay 7th In Swimming Finals

The impressive run of star swimmer Srihari Nataraj and Indian women's team ended with sixth and seventh place finishes in the finals of men's 100m backstroke and 4x100m freestyle relay respectively at the Asian Games on Sunday. Srihari, who had touched the pad at 54.71s to finish second in his heat and fifth overall to progress to the final, came up a timing of 54.48 seconds in the final. He was 2.25 behind gold medallist Xu Jiayu (52.23) of China. Irie Ryosuke of Japan (53.46) and Korea's Lee Juho (53.54) won the silver and bronze medals respectively. The women's team comprising Olympian Maana Patel, Dhinidhi Desinghu, Janvi Choudhary and Shivangi Sarma clocked 3:54:66 in the final to take the seventh place. China, Japan and Hong Kong won the gold, silver and bronze respectively.

The Indian men's team missed out on an Asian Games bronze medal in table tennis after a second-string South Korea blanked them 3-0 in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Harmeet Desai lost the first match 0-3 to An Jaehyun. G Sathiyan tried to put up a fight, but it was not enough to get past Park Ganghyeon as India trailed 0-2 after the first two ties. The onus was on Achantha Sharath Kamal to bring India back into the contest. However, things did not quite unfold in the manner the Indians would have liked as the veteran from Chennai went down 2-3 to Oh Junsung.

Riding on a Sunil Chhetri strike, the Indian men's football team held Myanmar to a 1-1 draw and progressed to the round of 16 in the Asian Games on Sunday. They will play Saudi Arabia in the pre-quarters. Chhetri scored from the spot in the 23rd minute but it was Rahim Ali who earned the penalty when he was brought down inside the box by Hein Zeyar Lin. While Lin was shown a yellow card for his sliding tackle, the peerless Chhetri made no mistake in finding the back of the net, in what was a repeat of the act he performed against Bangladesh in the second group game two days ago.
