The Royal Challengers Bangalore finally tasted success in franchise cricket as the Smriti Mandhana-led women's team went on to win the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 title on Sunday. RCB's victory against the Delhi Capitals saw Mandhana's women's team register its name in the history books while the men's team continues to be without a title in 16 years of its IPL participation. As fans took to social media to congratulate RCB on the win, Rajasthan Royals shared a meme that set the internet ablaze.
World number two Carlos Alcaraz cruised home in a 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 victory over Daniil Medvedev on Sunday to win a second straight Indian Wells ATP title, both coming at the Russian's expense. Alcaraz captured his first title since Wimbledon last July and became the first repeat winner at Indian Wells since Novak Djokovic won three straight titles from 2014-16. For the 20-year-old Spaniard, 12 days in the California desert proved just what he needed after a stuttering start to the season, which included a quarter-final exit at the Australian Open and an ankle injury that forced him out of his opening match at Rio de Janeiro in February.
Carlos Alcaraz overcame a sluggish start and finished with a flourish to successfully defend his Indian Wells crown with a 7-6(5), 6-1 win over Daniil Medvedev in the final on Sunday (Mar 17).
An unstoppable Kylian Mbappe hit a hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain romped to a 6-2 win away to Montpellier on Sunday that allowed them to open up a huge 12-point lead at the top of Ligue 1. Vitinha put PSG ahead at the Stade de la Mosson and Mbappe doubled their advantage midway through the first half, only for an Arnaud Nordin header and a Teji Savanier penalty to bring Montpellier back level at the interval. However, a marvellous Mbappe goal restored PSG's lead shortly after the break and Lee Kang-in made it 4-2 before the France captain completed his hat-trick.
Florian Wirtz scored after 84 seconds as Bayer Leverkusen made it 38 games unbeaten in all competitions with a 3-2 victory in Freiburg on Sunday. Leverkusen's seventh league win on the bounce kept them 10 points clear of serial champions Bayern Munich with eight games to play in their quest for the club's first ever Bundesliga crown. "It was a good performance, a deserved victory. It's not easy to win in Freiburg but we keep going," Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso told DAZN before praising the performance of his playmaker Wirtz.
