Archery, Table Tennis, Hockey Players Among 49 Indian Athletes To Arrive In Paris Olympics Games Village

A total of 49 Indian athletes, including the entire archery, table tennis and hockey teams, have arrived at the Games Village so far to participate in the Paris Olympics, beginning July 26. While 39 athletes, including the eight-member table tennis team and 19-member Indian men's hockey team, have reached the French capital, 10 shooters out of the 21 who qualified for the Olympics, have reached Chateauroux. All the six members of the archery team, along with two tennis players, a shuttler, a rower and two swimmers reached the City of Lights.

A 117-strong contingent will represent the tricolour in Paris, with the likes of javelin star Neeraj Chopra, badminton stars PV Sindhu, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu among the favourites to bring home a medal.

Livid at being denied accreditation for the Paris Games, India's Korean archery coach Baek Woong Ki on Saturday said he would not continue after his contract expires on August 30, and lashed out at the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for "poor and hasty administration". Woong Ki, who reached the French capital with the Indian team after overseeing its preparation in Marseille, said he "was removed from the Olympic coaching role at a critical time" and will now be flying back to India with his return ticket already booked.

A total of 117 athletes will be sent by India in their contingent, which includes the likes of two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. Athletics will nonetheless make for the biggest group in the contingent with 29 names (11 women and 18 men), followed by shooting (21) and hockey (19).

The trio, who had qualified as the top-seed, beat Estonia's Lisell Jaatma, Meeri-Marita Paas and Maris Tetsmann, 232-229 in a one-sided final here.
