Former Sri Lankan cricketer and current Rajasthan Royals (RR) coach and Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara on Friday expressed happiness at Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel earning a maiden national side call-up for the Test series against England at home, saying that the player understands pressure well and has a fine work ethic. Dhruv was a surprise call-up to the Indian squad for the first two Tests against England, starting from January 25. In the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Jurel played as a finisher for RR, scoring 152 runs in 13 matches at an average of 21.71 and a strike rate of over 172, with his best score being 34*.

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl against Afghanistan in the first T20I of the three-match series on Thursday in Mohali. The first T20I marks the start of the first bilateral series between the two teams. Apart from World Cup and continental events, India and Afghanistan have never played a series. The win helped the side level the two-match series 1-1. This was only the second time that India managed to draw a Test series in the Rainbow Nation. Emotions were heavily invested during the Indian cricket team's second and final Test match against South Africa at Newlands, Capetown. The guests suffered an innings-and-32-run drubbing in the first Test match in Centurion and this was their only chance to make up for it with a series-levelling win. Team India came with added energy and went on to win the game by 7 wickets that too within two days. What the win meant for the side was clearly visible when India skipper Rohit Sharma vented out his frustration with an animated celebration after taking the catch of Aiden Markram. The wicket more or less made sure that India had to chase a paltry total.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has no qualms in admitting that the South Africa series was a challenging one and said it was India skipper Rohit Sharma, who helped him maintain a positive mindset. Jaiswal managed only 50 runs in 4 innings on bouncy tracks at Supersport Park in Centurion and Newlands in Cape Town as the two-Test series ended in 1-1 draw. "Rohit Sharma helps me maintain a positive frame of mind and we needed to score runs quickly against new ball," said Jaiswal after his quickfire 28 off 23 balls set the tone during India's chase of 79.
