Rohit surpassed former India captain Virat Kohli (3,296) and New Zealand's Martin Guptill (3,299) after Sri Lanka invited the hosts to bat first at the start of the three-match series in Lucknow.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma achieved a big landmark on Thursday as he went past teammate Virat Kohli and New Zealand's Martin Guptill to become the leading run-getter in men's T20 international. Rohit surpassed Guptill's tally of 3299 runs when he reached a personal score of 37 in the first T20 international against Sri Lanka in Lucknow.
Virat Kohli, who had stepped down as the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper after the 2021 IPL season, said he took that call to give himself some space and manage his workload. Kohli had announced his decision to leave IPL captaincy after saying that T20 World Cup will be his last tournament as India skipper in the shortest format. He was later removed as ODI captain before he quit the leadership role in five-day format. "I'm not someone who holds onto things more than I should. Even if I know I can do a lot more, if I'm not going to enjoy the process, I'm not going to do it," Kohli, one of the modern day greats, said on "The RCB Podcast" about dropping the captain's armband.

Former India skipper Virat Kohli has responded to ex-teammate Yuvraj Singh's letter in which the latter called him a "legendary captain". Taking to Instagram, Kohli posted a heartfelt message for Yuvraj, saying the now retired cricketer "will always be an inspiration". "Yuvi Pa thank you for this wonderful gesture," wrote Kohli on Instagram along with a picture of Yuvraj's letter. "Coming from someone who's seen my career unfold from day 1, it means a lot. Your life and your comeback from cancer was, is and will always be an inspiration for people in all walks of life not just cricket," added Kohli.
