West Indies batting great Brian Lara feels India pacer Umran Malik needs to add variety to his bowling in order to succeed at international level. Umran broke into the Indian side after impressing everyone with his pace during last year's Indian Premier League (IPL) season. He was rewarded with an India call-up, and went on to make his T20I and ODI debuts later that year in June and November, respectively. However, his form massively dipped during this year's IPL, and was even dropped from the team due to the same.
Veteran cricketer Abhinav Mukund has backed the Hardik Pandya-led Team India to bounce back in the second T20I against West Indies on Monday. India trail West Indies 0-1 in the five-match series, following their defeat in the series opener on Thursday. India captain Hardik has been under criticism for his tactics during the match, which India lost by four wickets. However, Mukund has thrown his weight behind Hardik as he is leading a young team with a lot of fresh faces.
Shardul Thakur had a stellar third ODI against West Indies as he returned with career-best figures of 4/37 and helped India clinch the must-win tie for a series victory. He claimed eight wickets. With his performance against West Indies on Tuesday, Shardul also completed a half-century of wickets since the conclusion of the 2019 ODI World Cup. Interestingly, Shardul is the only bowler in the Indian team to have completed a half-century of scalps in this period. Former India batter Aakash Chopra has slammed the management for the under utilisation of pacer Umran Malik in the first ODI against West Indies on Thursday. Umran was picked in the XI for the series opener but bowled just three overs, and also failed to take a wicket. Despite giving 10 runs in his first over, Umran recovered and gave away only seven runs in his next two overs. However, he was the only bowler who failed to pick a wicket in the series opener.
Former India fast bowler RP Singh said pacer Umran Malik will have to improve his skills as a bowler as speed alone cannot be his weapon, adding that he is one of the bowlers in fray to play in the World Cup. “You have a good number of matches before the World Cup. He can get 5-6 games in the Asia Cup, and three more matches (against Australia). Umran has the advantage of pace. But the issue with him is the skill — his deliveries do not move much,” RP Singh said. “In international cricket, speed alone cannot be the only weapon. You have to make a game-plan as well, and that is something he is not learning as quickly as he should. He also concedes a lot of runs. But he seems to be in the loop for the World Cup because he has the pace." “But he should also get game-time. You cannot have someone playing one match and then sitting out for two. If you think Umran is a long-term option then he has to be polished accordingly,” said RP Singh during an interaction organised by Jio Cinema.
