Bawa, one of the standout performers in India's triumphant U-19 World Cup campaign early this year, showed why he is rated highly. The 19-year-old, who made his India 'A' debut in the second game of the series and took 1-14, got onto the wicket-takers' board by dismissing Mark Chapman (11) --- caught behind by Sanju Samson --- in his first spell. Others to contribute for the hosts include leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (2-39) and Kuldeep Yadav (2-29).
India A are currently squaring off against New Zealand A in a three-match unofficial ODI series. The ODIs are being followed by a three-match Test series, which India A won 2-0. The hosts also lead the ODI series 1-0, having defeated the visitors by seven wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday. The second and third ODIs will be played at the same venue on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively. After electing to bowl, India A bundled out New Zealand A for 167 in 40.2 overs.
Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will be leading India A in the upcoming one-day series against New Zealand A which will be played in Chennai. The series will begin on September 22, and the next two matches will be played on Septembe 25 and 27. The likes of Prithvi Shaw, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur and Umran Malik have also been named in the squad.
The second and third matches are scheduled for September 25 and 27 respectively. Prithvi Shaw, who has been in fine form in the Duleep Trophy, is back in the mix along with most players, who were part of the ODI series in Zimbabwe.
Promising batter Tilak Varma scored his maiden first- class hundred while Kuldeep Yadav bowled with much more control as the first 'unofficial Test' between India A and New Zealand A ended in a draw on Sunday. The match ended after New Zealand scored 133 for 4 in their second innings. This was after India A skipper Priyank Panchal declared his team's innings at 571 for 6 with Tilak becoming the third centurion of the innings with a fine 121 off 183 balls.
India A led by 92 runs in the first innings with a day's play left. Easwaran, whose attacking batting on second evening set the tone, laid the platform with a chiselled 132 off 194 balls before Patidar took it upon himself to punish the New Zealand attack. Young N T Tilak Varma, who had impressed one and all in T20s for Mumbai Indians, looked equally adept while playing the traditional format as he smashed his way to an unbeaten 82 during an unbroken stand of 167 for the fifth wicket with Patidar.
Gujarat opener Priyank Panchal was on Wednesday named captain of the 16-member India 'A' squad for the three four-day games against New Zealand 'A', starting later this month. Apart from Panchal, the squad also includes the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kuldeep Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna. Pace sensation Umran Malik, 22, has also been named in the squad. The selectors also took into consideration performances of those players who fared well in the domestic season and named the likes of Bengal's star batter Abhimanyu Easwaran, Madhya Pradesh's Ranji Trophy winning hero Rajat Patidar, and Mumbai's Sarfaraz Khan.
Apart from Panchal, the squad also includes the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kuldeep Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna. Pace sensation Umran Malik, 22, has also been named in the squad.
