Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has won the toss and elected to bat first.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma is looking for his frontline batsmen to score quicker when they take on the West Indies in the second match of their two-test series, starting in Georgetown, Guyana on Thursday.
India ODI captain Rohit Sharma has leaped up to second spot in the ODI men's batting rankings, trailing only Pakistan captain Babar Azam now. Despite India losing the ODI series against Sri Lanka 2-0, Rohit was the highest run-scorer, scoring 157 runs at a strike rate of 141.44, including two fifties. After Babar, Indian batters occupy the next three spots, with Rohit Sharma in second, Shubman Gill in third and Virat Kohli in fourth. The three are separated by just 19 rating points.
Alick Athanaze missed out on a maiden Test century but played the key role in ensuring the safety of a draw for the West Indies against South Africa on the final day of the rain-affected first Test of a two-match series at Queen's Park Oval on Sunday. Set the unlikely victory target of 298 after the Proteas declared their second innings at 173 for three just before lunch, Atahanze's determined 92 and a fifth-wicket partnership of 65 with Jason Holder (31 not out) guided the hosts from the discomfort of 127 for four just after tea to 201 for five at the end of play.
Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada combined on Saturday to earn South Africa a healthy first innings lead over the West Indies with the visitors attempting to defy the impact of inclement weather in seeking to force an unlikely victory going into the final day of the first Test of a two-match series in Trinidad. Steady rain restricted play to just the final session on the fourth day but in that time South Africa dismissed the home side for 233 in the first innings and then made their intentions clear in reaching 30 without loss off five overs in the second innings at the close.
After seeing fellow left-arm orthodox spinner Jomel Warrican (4-69) lead the home side's effort in eventually dismissing the visitors on the third morning, Maharaj knew he had the chance to take the fight to the West Indies' top order. And his variations of flight and pace claimed the wickets of Mikyle Louis, debutant Keacy Carty and left-hander Alick Athanaze, among three rain interruptions. "It's really about keeping it simple and being consistent and repetitive in conditions like this... and I like repetitions," said Maharaj at the end of play.
The Proteas have named their side to face the West Indies in the first Test of a two-match series starting in Trinidad on Wednesday.
The Proteas have lost the services of fast bowler Gerald Coetzee for next month's two-Test series against the West Indies in the Caribbean.
