The Tour de France is set to be the ‘Pog and Rog show’ once again as Primoz Roglic seeks to deny fellow Slovenian Tadej Pogacar a third consecutive title.
The Slovenian was unsurprisingly on Monday named in the UAE Team Emirates line-up for the race, which gets underway in Copenhagen on Friday. Switzerland's Marc Hirschi was a notable omission, but Polish climber Rafal Majka, Mikkel Bjerg, Brandon McNulty and Vegard Stake Laengen all made the cut. New Zealander George Bennett and Spain's Marc Soler, both signed in the off-season, are in the team, as is Italian sprinter Matteo Trentin. "We've worked very hard all year as a team to prepare for this," said the 23-year-old Pogacar. "So far this year has been positive for the team and we hope to continue this momentum." Pogacar is a strong favourite for the Tour after another impressive season which has seen him win the one-day Strade Bianche and two stage races. Meanwhile, Trek-Segafredo named former world champion Mads Pedersen as their team leader on Monday. Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko, who finished seventh last year, will be the main man for Astana, who will also have four Italian riders on the start line in Denmark.
Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) may not carry the “fear factor” of Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) – but that does not mean he should be discounted at the Tour de France, claims Bradley Wiggins. Thomas became just the second rider in history to claim career wins at the Tour de Suisse, Criterium du Dauphine and Tour de France with victory in Switzerland last week. Ad/> It has fuelled hopes he can make a surprise challenge at the Tour next month, with the Welshman expected to fight for leadership duties at Ineos alongside Adam Yates and Dani Martinez.
UAE Team Emirates and their champion rider Tadej Pogacar will be looking to reinforce their position at the pinnacle of cycling when they begin defence of the Tour de France title on July 1.
Chris Froome will race in a 10th Tour de France after being named in Israel-Premier Tech’s eight-strong team. The four-time champion is enjoying his best season since his horror crash at the 2019 Criterium du Dauphine, which left him with a fractured neck, femur, hip, elbow and ribs.
Four-times champion Chris Froome is set to make his 10th appearance at the Tour de France next month after being named in the Israel Premier Tech squad on Wednesday.
Jumbo-Visma look to be one of the teams to beat at the Tour de France after confirming Primoz Roglic, Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert in their line-up. Slovenian Roglic will be looking to win his fourth Grand Tour — he has won the Vuelta a Espana three times — having pulled out of last year’s Tour de France following a crash on stage three.
Geraint Thomas says he is “happy to do whatever” at the Tour de France after leadership questions emerged following his overall victory at the Tour de Suisse. Thomas, 36, became the first British winner of the Tour de Suisse after finishing second in the individual time trial on Sunday. Ad/> The 2018 Tour de France champion was not expected to lead Ineos Grenadiers but took charge after Dani Martinez lost time on the opening stage and Adam Yates tested positive for Covid-19.
