Sri Lanka named all-rounder Charith Asalanka as captain of their Twenty20 side on Tuesday ahead of a three-match series against world champions India starting this weekend.
The Indian men's cricket team, under new head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, arrived in Pallekele via Colombo to a warm welcome, with the recently-crowned T20 world champions playfully mingling with fans and giving them some precious moments. The 15-member India team along with the support staff had left Mumbai on Monday after a pre-departure press conference addressed by Gambhir, who took over Rahul Dravid as the national coach, and BCCI's chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. They arrived the same same day in Pallekele after a short layover in Colombo.
Suryakumar Yadav pulled off a sensational catch to dismiss David Miller in the T20 World Cup 2024 - a moment that contributed massively in the Rohit Sharma-led side clinching the title. Miller slammed the ball straight down the ground and although SKY pulled off a brilliant effort, there was a lot of controversy over whether his feet touched the boundary line during the whole incident. Indian cricket team spinner Axar Patel opened up about the entire incident during the high-profile match and even revealed the conversation between his teammates after SKY's brilliant catch during the encounter.
New Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has admitted that the retirement of stalwarts is a natural thing, and that the team will have to adapt to transition phases. Gambhir's arrival as coach was preceded by the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20Is, following India's 2024 T20 World Cup victory. Asked whether Gambhir instead encouraged players to be versatile enough for different formats, and emphasised on being consistent in their selection across formats.
Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about his relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah during a press conference before leaving for Sri Lanka. "I have a fabulous relationship with him. Jay Shah and I go a long way back. All these speculations about different things are given on different pages. I think we can do a better job by clarifying those things rather than putting it in the press. We go a long way back. So far, it's been a great relationship. Hopefully, it continues that way," Gambhir said in the press conference.
Suryakumar Yadav was the main talking point when India's squad for the Sri Lanka Tour was announced. The star batter was named the captain ahead of India's T20 World Cup vice-captain Hardik Pandya. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir on Monday elaborated on the plan behind making Yadav the skipper of the T20I team, and not Pandya. "You (would) want a captain that's going to be more likely to play all the games. Why Surya was made captain? Because he is one of the deserving candidates. The one we know has been around the dressing room over the last one year, you get feedback from the dressing room a lot.He has got a good cricketing brain and he is still one of the best T20 batters in the world," Agarkar elaborated before the team's departure for Sri Lanka.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir and selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar addressed a joint press conference ahead of the team's departure to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series, featuring 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is. During the press conference in Mumbai, Agarkar and Gambhir shared their views on some of the most talked-about topics in Indian cricket, including the non-selection of Hardik Pandya as T20I skipper, as Suryakumar Yadav was promoted to the leadership role. Gambhir and Agarkar also explained why Ravindra Jadeja was not picked for the ODI series, and Shubman Gill's future as a player and a leader in the three formats.
Gautam Gambhir Press Conference Live Updates: Addressing his first media conference as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, Gautam Gambhir has a tough task ahead of him, as he finds himself in the middle of a tricky transition. With Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja deciding to retire from T20 Internationals after their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, Gambhir has had to take some tough captaincy calls. Suryakumar Yadav's promotion as the skipper in the shortest format, ahead of the 'natural successor' Hardik Pandya, is the biggest burning topic in Indian cricket at the moment. Gambhir is expected to explain the decision and clarify a number of other topics, such as Shubman Gill's promotion as white-ball vice-captain as well as Ravindra Jadeja's ODI snub.
