England great Stuart Broad set a new if unwanted record by conceding 35 runs in a Test over, against India at Edgbaston on Saturday.
England pacer Stuart Broad might have 550 wickets to his name in the longest format of the game but on Saturday, the veteran bowler ended up bowling the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket as he ended up conceding 35 runs in the 84th over of the innings. Broad chose to bowl short deliveries, and Jasprit Bumrah, on captaincy debut, kept on slogging and as a result, the boundaries kept on flowing. As Bumrah kept on smashing Broad, the likes of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja could not stop laughing in the Indian dressing room.
Stuart Broad on Saturday became the third pacer in Test cricket history to claim 550 wickets. He dismissed Mohammed Shami on Day 2 of the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test match between India and England at Edgbaston in Birmingham to register the record. The right-arm England pacer needed just one wicket to reach the milestone when he had entered the game but he remained wicketless on Day 1 despite bowling 15 overs. It was in his 16th over of the match and the first on Day 2 when Broad finally got a wicket.
India vs England, 5th Test, Day 2 Live Score Updates: All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will look to get to his hundred when play resumes on Day 2 of the ongoing 5th Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. At stumps on Day 1, India's score read 338/7 with Jadeja and Mohammed Shami unbeaten on 83 and 0. The first day belonged to Rishabh Pant as he played a knock of 146, studded with 20 fours and 4 sixes. He combined with Jadeja to form a 222-run stand for the sixth wicket after India were reduced to 98/5. The likes of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer all disappointed and in the end, it all boiled down to Pant and Jadeja's rescue act. James Anderson took three wickets while Matthew Potts scalped two. (LIVE SCORECARD)
The cricket ebbed with the weather at Edgbaston. England’s advantage went with the clouds that blew away in the afternoon, and India’s batsmen thrived under a bright blue sky later in the day. It made a long, hard day of it for the bowlers, who found the ground shifted so quickly beneath them that they lost the footing they’d secured in the morning.
James Anderson picked up both wickets on his return to the England side as India reached 53 for two on a rain-shortened first morning of the rearranged fifth Test at Edgbaston.
India and England will square off in the rescheduled fifth Test starting from Friday at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Team India are currently leading the five-match series 2-1, having won Tests at Lord's and Oval last year. However, defeating the current England side would not be easy as under a different captain Ben Stokes, the Three Lions are playing a much more attacking brand of cricket. India would be led by Jasprit Bumrah after Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday morning once again, as per the BCCI.
