England on Wednesday named a strong XI for the first Test of the highly-anticipated Ashes series against Australia at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Jonny Bairstow returns to the side after a lenghty injury lay-off, while Moeen Ali, who came out of retirement to replace Jack Leach in the squad, is also included in the XI. The hosts have also opted for the experience of Stuart Broad over the pace of Mark Wood in a bold selection call.
Veteran seamer James Anderson is still addicted to cricket at 40 and only getting better with age, his strike partner Stuart Broad said, with the prolific England pair expected to play key roles as they enter their ninth Ashes campaign.
All-rounder Moeen Ali, who had called his retirement from Test cricket in September 2021, is considering returning to the side after England's team management approached him for the upcoming Ashes series starting from June 16, according to Sky Sports. England faced a big setback after Jack Leach was ruled out of the Ashes series due to a low back stress fracture during England's Test victory over Ireland on Saturday. According to Sky Sports, England's management approached Moeen Ali to rejoin test cricket for the upcoming series to replace injured Jack Leach. England's selection panel is also looking for other options like Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks. However, the decision acout who will replace Leach has not been taken yet.
Former England cricketer Mark Butcher believes England would prefer to go into the upcoming Ashes series against arch rivals Australia with the redoubatble pace trio of James Anderson, Ollie Robinson, and tearaway Mark Wood. The high-stakes Ashes series will start from June 16. "We think England's preferred choice of bowling attack would be Anderson, Robinson, Wood, in terms of the three quicks. We still don't know what [Ben] Stokes' status is. I'm sure he will be absolutely fine, but if that isn't the case, Stuart Broad today looked a little bit on the tardy side, a little slow and lacking in penetration when the ball was a little bit older," Butcher told Sky Sports.
The World Test Championship final between India and Australia is just around the corner and both the teams are ready to face each other in the ultimate battle of the longest format. The Rohit Sharma-led side will be definitely relying on Virat Kohli for a big innings, as the star batter recently roared back to form after battling a lean patch. The 34-yrar-old Virat, who was struggling to get runs, smashed his much-awaited 28th Test century during the fourth Test for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in March, this year.
Debutant fast bowler Josh Tongue marked his call-up into the Ashes squad with a five-wicket haul as England beat Ireland by 10 wickets inside three days at Lord's but only after a record partnership of 163 between tailenders Mark Adair and Andy McBrine. England were well-placed for an innings win when Ireland started the day needing 255 more runs to make Ben Stokes's men bat again. But Ireland, handicapped by the absence of injured opener James McCollum kept England at bay while Harry Tector (51) and Lorcan Tucker helped add 118 runs in the morning session for the loss of just three wickets.
