The 110th edition of the Tour de France is fast approaching and the excitement is building for the most prestigious cycling race in the world. This year's route starts in Bilbao, Spain, on July 1 and culminates with the final stage on July 23, the traditional finish through the cobbled streets of the Champs-Elysees.
The wait is almost over: on Saturday 1st July, the peloton will roll out of the Basque city of Bilbao to get the 110th edition of the Tour de France under way. Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) are the two main favourites to do battle for the yellow jersey.
Tadej Pogacar won the fourth stage of this year's Paris-Nice, which took the riders on a 164.7km spin from Saint-Amand-Montrond to La Loge des Gardes.
Jumbo-Visma took victory in an absorbing and original team time trial on Stage 3 at Paris-Nice, propelling GC hopeful Jonas Vingegaard up the standings, while Magnus Cort (EF Education–EasyPost) snatched the overall lead. ‘Race for the Sun’ organisers courted controversy in the build-up after overhauling the TTT, with teams awarded times based on the first rider – not the fourth – to cross the line.
Tadej Pogacar will miss this year’s Strade-Bianche as he has decided to race in Paris-Nice, meaning he will go head-to-head against Jonas Vingegaard. It’s the first time the pair have met at a WorldTour stage race since their thrilling battle at last year’s Tour de France, which was won by Vingegaard.
The route of the 2023 Giro d’Italia was announced on Monday with the race organisers seemingly doing their utmost best to court the Belgian Remco Evenepoel. Three time trials for a total of 70km against the clock will favour the world champion – although the 22-year-old will have to prove himself over far tougher climbs than he did when winning La Vuelta this September.
Remco Evenepoel made history with his triumph at the UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong. He became the fourth rider to add a world title to a Monument and Grand Tour win in the same season. Evenepoel, who won La Doyenne and La Vuelta this year, blitzed his rivals in the closing stages of Sunday's race.
