Pakistan named experienced seamer Hasan Ali as the replacement for injured fast bowler Naseem Shah for the ODI World Cup which starts next month in India.
The Pakistan Cricket Board on Thursday held a review meeting of their woeful Asia Cup show in the wake of their World Cup squad announcement. All teams must finalise their 15-player squads for the cricket showpiece before the September 28 deadline, with any replacements after this date requiring approval from the ICC. "The philosophy behind this review was to create an atmosphere of open discussion and develop consensus," PCB chairman of the management committee Zaka Ashraf said in a statement. "The idea is to have everyone on board and debate about performances, identifying the problems and their solutions.” The review meeting was also attended by head coach Mickey Arthur, captain Babar Azam, vice-captain Shadab Khan and former skippers Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez.
Much has been said and written about the worsening relationship between Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam and marquee pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi. However, the cricketers quashed the outside noise as they greeted each other in a heartwarming manner at the wedding ceremony of Shaheen. Babar arrived at the wedding venue in a grand style and then gave a big hug to Shaheen who got married to Ansha, the daughter of former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi, just days after the conclusion of the Asia Cup 2023.
The Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team, one of the pre-Asia Cup favourites, could not live up to its reputation and were knocked out of the Super 4 stage. The Pakistan team were pegged back by injuries of Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah too. Though they fought till the end, Pakistan could not go over the line in a must-win match against co-hosts Sri Lanka, and were shown the door.
The Pakistan cricket team had a disappointing run in the Asia Cup 2023 as they were eliminated after losing to India and Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stage of the competition. Some star players were not able to perform well for the national side and according to a report on Geo.tv, star fast bowler Shaheen Afridi is all set to replace Shadab Khan as the team's vice-captain for Cricket World Cup 2023. The report further claimed that Pakistan's World Cup squad can look like this - Babar Azam (c), Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Abdulla Shafiq, Salman Ali Agha, Iftikhar Ahmed, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Hassan Ali, Zaman Khan.
After Pakistan crashed out of the Asia Cup in the Super 4 stage, reports emerged that captain Babar Azam was involved in a verbal spat with star pacer Shaheen Afridi. Babar reportedly questioned the role of the senior players in the Asia Cup 2023 campaign. However, Shaheen interrupted him and said he should not generalise and not criticise those who did well. Babar responded by saying that he is well aware about who is doing well and who's not. The report also claimed that Babar, went to the press conference after the loss, and on his way to the hotel did not talk to anybody.
The Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team, despite a good start to the Asia Cup 2023, could not keep up the momentum and were knocked out of the Super 4 stage. The Pakistan team were pegged back by injuries of Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah too. Though they fought till the end, Pakistan could not go over the line as victors in a well-contested match against Sri Lanka, and were shown the door. The loss to Sri Lanka would rankle the team for a long time as it was one of the biggest tournament ahead of the Cricket World Cup in India.
Union Sports Minsters Anurag Thakur said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier decided a bilateral series of cricket between India and Pakistan wouldn't take place until Pakistan puts end to "terrorism" following the Anantnag encounter. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur while speaking to reporters said, "BCCI had decided much earlier that we would not play bilateral matches with Pakistan until they put an end to terrorism, cross-border attacks and infiltration. I think the sentiments of the country and of the public are also the same."
