Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi led an inspired attack to bowl out Sri Lanka for 222 but the hosts hit back with two wickets before stumps on the opening day of the first Test on Saturday. The tourists reached 24 for two at the close of play in Galle after losing their openers Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique. Azhar Ali, on three, and skipper Babar Azam, on one, were batting at close of play with Pakistan still trailing by 198 runs. Fast bowler Kasun Rajitha trapped Imam leg before wicket for two and Prabath Jayasuriya took down Shafique for 13 with his left-arm spin on a day dominated by the bowlers.
Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah and all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz have been picked to play the first Test against Sri Lanka as the tourists announced their XI On Friday. Yasir, 36, will play his first Test since August last year after recovering from a thumb injury, Pakistan said in a statement on the eve of the two-match series starting Saturday in Galle. Nawaz, a left-hand batsman who bowls left-arm spin, will return to the side after almost six years.
Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi have been slotted in Category A of both the newly-announced white-ball as well as red-ball contracts by the Pakistan Cricket Board, PCB announced on Thursday. The contract will come into effect from Friday, July 1. The PCB has introduced separate red and white-ball contracts, while four more players have been added to the Emerging Category. This means a total of 33 players, 13 more than the previous season, have received contracts for the next 12 months.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam has now been at the top of T20I rankings for batters for the most number of days, after retaining his top billing in the recently released rankings. As a result he surpassed former India captain Virat Kohli's record of 1,013 days at the top. In the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday, Babar held his position at the top of the T20I rankings charts, ahead of compatriot Mohammad Rizwan. His form in limited overs cricket has been phenomenal and the Pakistan skipper is also at the top of the ODI rankings, ahead of second-placed Kohli and third-placed Imam-ul-Haq.
After his debut stint in county cricket, pacer Naseem Shah said that Pakistan doesn't even have 30 per cent of the facilities that are available to club cricketers in England. The 19-year-old played for Gloucestershire in the ongoing season of the County Championship and T20 Blast. However, his season was cut short by an injury. Naseem, who hails from Pakistan's Lower Dir district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said that most players come from places where it is difficult to get proper facilities.
