George Russell admitted he had “got lucky twice” in capturing his first podium finish for Mercedes at the Australian Grand Prix.
A flawless Charles Leclerc led from start to finish to steer his Ferrari to an action-packed win at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday with world champion Max Verstappen failing to finish. The world championship leader from Monaco started from pole, held his position at the first corner and never looked back, scorching round the 58-lap Albert Park circuit to take the chequered flag by a massive 20.5 seconds. Red Bull's Sergio Perez was second with George Russell an encouraging third for the struggling Mercedes and his seven-time world champion teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth.
Charles Leclerc took his second win of the season as he dominated the Australian Grand Prix with a lights-to-flag victory, as his potential championship rival, Max Verstappen hit more technical issues in a worrying run of form. In the first three races of this year’s championship, the world champion already has two DNF’s to his name — something which could really hamper his championship credentials.
Lewis Hamilton was clearly frustrated towards the end of the Australian Grand Prix at being stuck behind George Russell in a battle for third. Mercedes were once again capitalising from Max Verstappen's retirement, which bumped the two Mercedes drivers up the grid.
Charles Leclerc wins his second race of the season for Ferrari and has a comfortable lead in the standings. Max Verstappen suffered a second DNF in the last laps of the race.
Sebastian Vettel’s action-packed Australian Grand Prix weekend is over after the Aston Martin driver crashed out in unusual circumstances in Melbourne. An eventful few days had seen the German land himself in hot water with stewards after driving a scooter around the Albert Park circuit during Friday’s first practice, leading to a subsequent fine being issued by the FIA.
Guillaume Rocquelin, Sebastian Vettel’s former race engineer, is set to take on a new role at Red Bull’s junior driver program.
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A Ferrari versus Red Bull battle is shaping up as the likely scenario on Sunday at the first Australian Grand Prix since the pandemic began in 2020.
