The Indian top-order did not live up to its reputation as the likes of Rohit Sharma (15), Shubman Gill (13), Cheteshwar Pujara (14) and Virat Kohli (14) failed to strike big. Virat Kohli's innings promised to be a gritty one with wickets falling at the other end. But in the 19th over of the Indian 1st innings, Mitchell Starc produced a slanted delivery that moved from a length and as Kohli attempted to defend he edged on to the second slip, where Steve Smith took an overhead catch. That left India four-down and Kohli was dejected.

After Australia piled on a huge 469-run total in their first innings of the World Test Championship final against India, a lot was expected from the opening duo of India skipper Rohit Sharma and talented youngster Shubman Gill. However, both the batters fell in the second session on the second day to leave the Indian team reeling. While Rohit Sharma was trapped LBW by Pat Cummins, Gill was bowled by Scott Boland. Gill committed and left the ball only to see the delivery swing back in to clip his stumps. It was a beautiful sight, but not so much for the Indian cricket team.

India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first against the Pat Cummins-led side. The Rahul Dravid-coached team went in with a four-pronged pace attack and preferred Ravindra Jadeja over seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as the lone spinner. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Usman Khawaja to give India a really good start before David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne stitched 69 runs for the second wicket for Australia. Shardul Thakur got better of Warner and then Mohammed Shami produced a ripper to get rid of Labuschagne.
