The countdown to the 2023 World Snooker Championship has begun with the qualifying campaign kicking off in Sheffield. Ahead of the main event at the Crucible Theatre, the field needs to be whittled down to 16 players, who will join the top 16 in the world rankings in the main draw on April 15.
World champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has been handed a major boost ahead of his bid for a record eighth Crucible crown in Sheffield later this month. Despite failing to lift a ranking event this season, O'Sullivan has clung onto top spot in the world boosted by the £500,000 he earned for his 18-13 win over Judd Trump in last year's World Championship final that saw him equal Stephen Hendry's haul of seven titles between 1990-1999.
The top 16 for the Snooker World Championship has been confirmed following Ryan Day’s 10-7 defeat to Mark Selby at the Tour Championship. Day was competing against Ding Junhui and Gary Wilson coming into this week before the Crucible, for a seeded place at the World Championship. Ad However, Day needed to beat Selby to stay in the running for an automatic Crucible spot since Ding was victorious over Mark Allen earlier in the week.
Ding Junhui overcame top seed Mark Allen 10-5 at Hull's Bonus Arena on Monday evening to advance to the semi-finals of the Tour Championship.
Anyone who predicted that not one of Ronnie O’Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Judd Trump, John Higgins or Mark Williams would be in Hull deserves either a pat on the back or equal billing at Derren Brown’s next stage show. These star names have between them reached only one ranking final all season: Trump lost to Mark Allen in the World Grand Prix’s title match in January. Ad Trump did win the Masters and O’Sullivan was successful at the Champion of Champions, but these are not ranking events and so didn’t count towards Tour Championship inclusion.
