After a close season-long battle with Romeo Ferraris, Hyundai Motorsport N was able to edge further ahead of their rival to secure second place in the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup final standings after the final event, Race DE at Sachsenring, where Norbert Michelisz finished his season with a King of the Weekend podium. Michelisz emerged as the lead Hyundai Motorsport driver despite the pace and potential of Mikel Azcona, who entered the weekend as a King of the Season contender but endured a weekend of penalties and frustrations. Mikel Azcona was crowned King of the Weekend after an extraordinary fifth round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup, Race IT, at Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi where searing hot temperatures gave all competitors a stern test in the glorious Regione Lazio. Azcona took his first King of the Weekend win as his Hyundai Motorsport N squad were victorious for their first weekend too as they overtook Romeo Ferraris in the standings after a weekend which promised much for the local squad but ultimately delivered a very different weekend than that expected.

Certainly one of the more intriguing newcomers to burst from the starting gates this season, Bruno Spengler marked his return to saloon car racing by making his FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup with Romeo Ferraris. While pressure might have come with a profile as lofty as his, Spengler quickly adapted to the rigours of both the ETCR’s innovative race weekend format and the sheer performance of his 500KW ‘Italian stallion’ saloon.

Twice a winner en-route to third overall in the 2021 PURE ETCR standings, Azcona’s arrival at Hyundai Motorsport came with high expectations of a title challenge in the inaugural FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup. Ad Azcona was only driver to switch manufacturers after ending his long association with the SEAT/CUPRA brand in favour of a move to Hyundai Motorsport N where he made his mark the squad’s most competitive entry as its highest-placed driver in five of the six events.

CUPRA EKS driver Adrien Tambay enjoyed a perfect Pool FURIOUS DHL Super Final to confirm his status as the first-ever FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup King of the Season in Sachsenring for Race DE. Tambay enjoyed a faultless weekend and was only denied the King of the Weekend crown by team-mate Tom Blomqvist setting a faster lap time in qualifying – the tie-break decider with the pair scoring the same across an exciting weekend of racing at the superlative Saxony circuit.

Pool FURIOUS drivers Adrian Tambay and Mikel Azcona had glorious starts to their Sundays in Sachsenring for the final day of the 2022 FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup with a win apiece in their respective Pool FURIOUS Semi Finals as the temperatures increased at the superb Saxony circuit. Ad Tambay kept his perfect record thus far this weekend intact with a win in Pool FURIOUS Semi Final One for CUPRA EKS, largely without incident, save for a late lunge from Luca Filippi in his Romeo Ferraris at the start of the final lap.

CUPRA EKS driver Adrien Tambay took a step closer to taking the first-ever FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup title with a win in the first Pool FURIOUS Quarter Final where the Frenchman dominated for 98% of the time, even if Hyundai Motorsport N’s Norbert Michelisz stalked his prey in epic fashion on the last lap to take the lead at the start of the final corner, only to lose it moments later as Tambay crossed the line just ahead. Mikel Azcona meanwhile took the FURIOUS Quarter Final Two win for Hyundai Motorsport N after an early fight with CUPRA EKS man Jordi Gené and late dice with hithertoo race-long leader Luca Filippi whose Romeo Ferraris Giulia ETCR had led from pole till the final corner too.

Title points leader Adrien Tambay took the Pool FURIOUS pole position at Sachenring for Race DE whilst  as the season-finale to the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup . Tambay took his CUPRA EKS CUPRA eRacer to a 1m 28.173s lap in the Q1 session and was unable to improve come Q2, but neither was his nearest rival, Mikel Azcona for Hyundai Motorport N in the Veloster N ETCR, with third fastest in both sessions, and overall, Norbert Michelisz finiding a slight improvement in lap time in Q2 for Hyundai Motorsport N.
