When she rallied to level set scores and had game points for a 4-0 advantage in the decider, it got uglier than usual. An opera of visceral sensations, the nag and snag of which perhaps channelled Serena Williams' fightback. But it was Watson who broke at love to take a 5-4 lead.

The US Open organisers confirmed on Monday that Zverev has withdrawn from the hardcourt Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows, where he finished runner-up behind Dominic Thiem in 2020.
World number two Alexander Zverev said he was "super happy" with his recovery following ankle surgery despite having to pull out of the U.S. Open, the main draw of which kicks off in New York on Monday.
