India skipper Rohit Sharma on Wednesday said that the likes of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant are looked upon as leaders within the group. Last week, Rohit was named as the Test skipper. Chetan Sharma, the Chairman of the Selection Committee had said that the management is looking at Rohit to groom future leaders and he also spoke on how the right-handed batter is an ideal candidate to lead the side. "I won't have that much of a role in telling them each and everything, they all are mature enough, it is just when someone needs to be there around them to guide them, I will be more than happy to do that. It is how we have come through the ranks, we were groomed by someone else. It is a natural process, everyone goes through this," said Rohit during a virtual press conference.
Fast bowler Deepak Chaharand batter Suryakumar Yadav have been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka. Deepak Chahar sustained a right quadriceps injury during bowling while Suryakumar Yadav suffered a hairline fracture during a fielding attempt in the third and final T20I against the West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday. After clinching the T20I series against West Indies, Team India will now look to carry their form into the three-match series against Sri Lanka, beginning Thursday. India and Sri Lanka will square off in three T20Is and two Tests, with the first match of the series to be played in Lucknow on Thursday. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur have been rested for the series against Sri Lanka and hence it will give a chance to the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer to show what they are capable of. The duo failed in the third T20I against West Indies, but they would hope that they impress against Sri Lanka.
India captain Rohit Sharma demoted himself down the order as young batters Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan opened the batting for the team in the third and final T20I against the West Indies. While Ruturaj failed to impress after getting out on a score of 4, Ishan Kishan, who failed to get going in the first and second T20I, played some excellent shots on his way to a 31-ball 34. Despite agreeing that he played well under pressure, former India batter Aakash Chopra said that the "questions will be raised" on Ishan's strike-rate repeatedly.
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India whitewashed the visiting West Indies side 3-0 in the T20I series. After securing two fabulous victories, the Indian team won the final match at the Eden Gardens by 17 runs. Asked to bat first, a relatively young India side displayed great composure and maturity under trying circumstances against a spirited touring bowling attack. Despite losing Ruturaj Gaikwad early, India strung together crucial partnerships as they posted 184/5 in 20 overs. In the course of this effort, Team India also achieved a new high for themselves in T20Is, thanks to a brilliant batting effort from Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer in the death overs.
