India's strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai feels the team is often "rushed" into big tournaments and the ongoing preparatory camp ahead of the T20 World Cup will give the players much needed time to unwind as well as work on their specific skills to deal with Australian conditions. India had their first training session here on Friday and will be playing two warm up games on October 10 and 13 before they travel to Brisbane for the ICC organised practice matches ahead of their World Cup opener against Pakistan in Melbourne on October 23.
The Indian cricket team is in Australia for the T20 World Cup, looking to win the title for the first time since MS Dhoni lifted the trophy in the maiden edition in 2007. The Indian team has come close a coupe of times, losing the final in 2014 and in the semi-final in 2016. But the team had a terrible outing in the tournament last year, failing to move past the Super 12 stage.
VVS Laxman, the National Cricket Academy head and India's stand-in coach for the South Africa ODI series, on Thursday said that it would be difficult for the selectors to get the right team going into the 50-over World Cup slated to be held in India next year. He said that all the youngsters are performing really well and the competition is good hence they are spoiled for choices. Laxman's comments came ahead of the 1st ODI between India and South Africa in Lucknow.
Rohit Sharma-led Team India departed for Australia for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the early hours of Thursday morning. The 2007 champions will look to win the crown this year after failing to make the semi-finals last year. Before the World Cup, Team India managed to gain some momentum after defeating Australia and South Africa in the respective bilateral series and one now hopes that India are able to go all the way in the tournament.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are two of the finest batters to have graced Indian cricket. Over the course of their careers, the two stalwarts have done wonders with the bat and inspired thousands of budding cricketers. One of those emerging stars who has idolised Kohli and Rohit over the years is Rajat Patidar, the man who could make his ODI debut for India on Thursday against South Africa.
Star India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant turned 25 on Tuesday and Wasim Jaffer extended his birthday wishes in quintessential fashion, with a meme. The meme, with three frames of India captain Rohit Sharma interviewing Pant, shows the former wishing the latter and asking him what he wants as a birthday gift. "Batting," is the reply in the second frame and the third has Rohit with a whacky expression. The tweet, in the backdrop of Pant not getting a chance to bat in the two T20Is against South Africa despite being in the playing XI, went viral in no time.
India lost the final T20I to South Africa in Indore on Tuesday by a big margin but Rohit Sharma's team won the series 2-1 and are going into the T20 World Cup on the back of twin victories over the Proteas and reigning champions Australia. India is far from a settled bunch as they have several chinks in their armour but the group is an upbeat one under Rohit's leadership.
