Former Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly said that an Indian Premier League (IPL) career can exist for a cricketer alongside stints in first-class cricket. Amid the controversy surrounding BCCI not offering central contracts to Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan over non-participation in domestic cricket, Ganguly mentioned that there are many players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and even Australia's David Warner who have successfully balanced both red-ball and white-ball cricket. He even recalled how he along with Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar used to play both formats during their playing days.

The Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) on February 28 announced the annual player contracts for 2023-24 season. While Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan hogged the limelight for being excluded from the list, there were several other star players too who failed to make a cut. One among them is spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Former India opener Aakash Chopra has expressed his surprise over the leg spinner being excluded from the central contracts of the BCCI. He added that Chahal's ouster means the selection committee is looking at other options.

The out-of-favour duo of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were excluded from the list of centrally-contracted players after they ignored the directive to play Ranji Trophy. "It (directive) is a very good move. Everybody should be playing Ranji Trophy cricket, but currently the emphasis is on the IPL. It is good, it is entertaining but the real cricket is the (five) days' cricket. Playing in domestic cricket is good, it keeps you in touch.

The report claimed that with KL Rahul ruled out due to injury and Rajat Patidar not scoring runs in the past couple of matches, the team management is all set to include the left-handed batter in the playing XI. It also quoted a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source who said that the team management also want to have a look at Padikkal as it is the last international game for Team India ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
