Rishabh Pant smashed 96 to help India to 357 for six on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka after Virat Kohli fell agonisingly short of fifty in his 100th five-day match Friday.

Rishabh Pant suffered a heartbreak as he was dismissed on 96, just four runs short of his fifth Test century, during the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali on Friday. Pant, who took 72 balls to reach his fifty, accelerated his innings after the half-century and sent the visiting bowlers to the cleaners with a flurry of fours and sixes before being dismissed for 96 off 97 balls. Pant hit nine fours and four sixes in total.

Virat Kohli missed out on a half-century in his landmark 100th Test as he was bowled out for 45 by left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya after he shared a 90-run stand with Hanuma Vihari, who played a fine 58-run knock.

Veteran India wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik on Tuesday said he could understand it would have been a "hard one to swallow" for Wriddhiman Saha when the team management decided to move on from him but said the call was pretty understandable as Rishabh Pant had "pretty much nailed his place in the side." Lauding the wicket-keeping skills of Saha, who was excluded from the Indian Test squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, Karthik said, "But you can see Rishabh Pant has pretty much nailed his place in the team. So then, you can understand which direction the Indian team is going in where they feel that if it's going to be a second keeper role, then they'll look at somebody younger."

His knock was laced with 10 boundaries and three sixes, striking at an average of just under 159.

Delhi Capitals confirm Ajit Agarkar's appointment as assistant coach

Ajit Agarkar was on Wednesday officially appointed as the assistant coach of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals. Agarkar will join the team after completing his commentating duties for India's home series against Sri Lanka beginning on Thursday. "I am very excited to be part of Delhi Capitals squad for this season," Agarkar said, on the development in a team statement.
