Indian captain KL Rahul has been ruled out of the upcoming five-match T20 series against the Proteas with injury, with Rishabh Pant named skipper.
South Africa are bracing for a formidable bowling attack from an Indian side eager to prove themselves when their Twenty20 series begins under New Delhi's scorching summer sun, skipper Temba Bavuma said Wednesday. The touring side will play the first of five matches on Thursday as focus remains on the short format ahead of this year's T20 World Cup. India have traditionally relied on their spinners on home turf but up-and-coming pace bowlers Avesh Khan and uncapped Umran Malik have kept up the country's fast bowling stocks.
KL Rahul, who was supposed to lead India in the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, has been ruled out due to an injury, BCCI informed through a tweet on Wednesday. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav has also been ruled out of the series owing to injury. Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is going to lead India in the series now. Hardik Pandya has been appointed vice-captain.
Rishabh Pant has gone from strength to strength in the last couple of years. He is currently the No.1 choice for the wicketkeeper's spot in the Indian cricket team across all three formats. Pant's rise has been quite meteoric as in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, starting on Thursday, he is also the vice-captain of Team India. Since playing a match-winning knock at the Gabba, Brisbane, which took India to a memorable 2-1 Test series win in Australia in 2020-21, Pant has not looked back. He has also led IPL team Delhi Capitals, which validates his rising stock in Indian cricket even more.
Rishabh Pant will be in action for Team India soon as he is part of the Indian cricket team squad that will take on South Africa in the upcoming T20I series at home. Pant's performance will be in focus as he had a below par IPL and would look to contribute to the team's cause. Veteran Dinesh Karthik is also in the squad and although Pant's place in the team is cemented, he would definitely want to keep his billing as India's top wicket-keeper batter intact with good performances.
India and South Africa will square off in a five-match T20I series, beginning June 9 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The Proteas had arrived in the national capital on June 2 and the side has been preparing since then. The Indian contingent was on a break after the intense Indian Premier League (IPL), and the side assembled in Delhi on Sunday and the squad finally began training on Monday.
Ravichandran Ashwin was one of India's best performers with the ball during the team's historic series win in Australia in 2020-21. But one of his most telling contributions during the series came with the bat as he strung together a crucial unbeaten partnership with Hanuma Vihari to guide India to a draw in the third Test match in Sydney. Both Ashwin and Vihari were struggling with injury during their time in the middle and were eventually ruled out of the last Test in Brisbane, which India went on to win.
India completed a phenomenal series victory in Australia at the start of 2021 as it beat the 'Baggy Greens' at their stronghold, Brisbane, in the fourth and last Test of the series by 3 wickets. It was India second successive series win down under. But this victory was special as it came against all odds. India had been humiliated in the first Test as they were blown away for just 36 runs in the second innings at Adelaide as the hosts took a lead in the series.
